Okay Ive had to take ranitidine for about a couple months or so; since my mom and I found out that it wasnt working the doctor put me on a stronger medication called omeprazole/prilosec. Now Ive been taking that for about a month or so. Still not working plus annoying side affects. ive still had acid reflux plus headaches so now my dose is doubled. Now my side affects have worsened to jittery feelings, anxiety attacks (about 2 in the past week, including today), major headaches and more often, my lips are slightly swollen (but i also have a cold sore so i doubt that that is my side affect), stomach aches, and continued acid reflux .  shakehead   havent been able to keep my mind on any one thing for about a week. I did not take my prilosec this morning becuase my mom needs to get a refil so this is the first time in weeks i have not taken medication, yet Im still feeling my usual side affects. Anyone have any ideas on what i should do Im seeing a gastrologist this friday and i will let them know all of this Im just wondering if anyone has suggestions or advice while i wait. It would be amazingly helpful. Thanks.

Hi Metcalfk,
Welcome to Healing Well!  I suspect that most of your reactions to the medication is likely to be anxiety related.  It's very common for people who experience GERD--especially initially--to have anxiety symptoms.

It makes sense to follow your doctor's orders regarding meds and see if it helps you. It takes some time to see improvement because the acid can burn, and healing is not immediate.

Hang in there.
I hope you get feeling better soon!

when do you get acid reflux? Is it triggered by food or stressful events?

I get acid reflux when eating acid related foods such as tomato sauce, hot wings, chocolate, orang juice ,etc. Ive moderately changed my diet so i dont eat as much of those foods. I cant stay away from those foods completely (ive tried) they are my favorites and as much as they are bad for me I dont want to get rid of them completely, hopefully that is understandable. I also get acid reflux mostly in the early morning and late night (even when im not laying down which i guess can trigger it). Ive been told acid reflux can be triggered by stress so looking back on my past i can mostly confirm it. thank you for answering my post.

i hear you, that it is very tough to give up some of the foods we love...chocolate was the worst sacrifice for me...and beer (carbonation)

but please let me tell you that it is a top priority for those with GERD to maintain a list of "trigger foods" foods that from experience are more than likely to increase reflux incidents

everybody's list is a little different but most of us have about a half dozen or more foods that we share in common that can not be...should not be eaten

common trigger foods are chocolate, carbonated beverages onions garlic tomatoes all kinds of mint , fatty foods (because they take a long time to digest) and big meals of any kind aggravate reflux

in my opinion controlling diet is one of the most important things you can and must do, to help yourself in dealing with this awful condition

(followed by sleeping on an incline...head and torso elevated... not just more pillows under your head !)

best of good luck to you...i know its a struggle

Thank you everyone for understanding and giving advice its all helped so much especially emotionally most people i have around me dont understand exactly how im feeling about this so they dont technically know how to help. im very excited to see the gastrologist this friday so they can tell me anything about my acid reflux. My mom thinks it may be H-pylori aor a stomach ulcer either way im glad i can get some help and support from this. If anyone has anymore suggestions it would be most appreciated. thank you again
