So far I have been able to find that PPIs cause deficiency in calcium, iron, B12, and frolic acid. Do PPIs cause magnesium deficiency too? Do they cause any other deficiency?

Is it advisable to take calcium, iron etc supplements while you are on PPIs?

I take calcium carbonate, which is an antacid as well as calcium supplement. I was taking it before I developed gerd, to reduce my bone thinning as I age. What is significant about this calcium loss is that studies have shown an increase in bone fractures for people on long term ppi use. So yes, do take calcium. I don't know as much about the other supplements, I only take calcium.

I heard that people who take PPIs should take calcium supplements in the form of calcium citrate; because these medications block stomach acid, your body may better absorb calcium citrate which does not need stomach acid for absorption.

Even on my ppi I believe I have too much acid. I was on 40 Mg Nexium twice daily, but now I'm just taking it once daily since I started the Koufman diet. So I'm staying with calcium carbonate unless my next bone scan suggests otherwise.

Adam

yes PPIs have been associated with magnesium deficiency and i have read evidence that the relationship is causal
