Ok,i recently had the TIF procedure, but first a little background. I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth and after suffering with acid reflux for about 5-6 yrs. and taking numerous types of pills I went to see a specialist about my reflux. I went and saw Dr. Glen Ihde who has been doing surgeries for Gerd for over 13 yrs. Anyways after he stuck some camera tube down my throat, it was determined that I desperately needed surgery before things got bad.
So on Jan.9,2012 I had the TIF procedure anyways after the surgery I really wasn't in much pain other than throat was killing me and I couldn't swallow nothing. Well in order to correct the swelling in my throat , another doctor at the hospital decided it best to give me a high dose of Medrol (steroid) into my IV. Well about 8 hrs. After the injection my heart rate fluctuated greatly and I started having a major anxiety attack (felt like I was dying). Needless to say it stopped after a couple of hours and the attack still come and go but I think it is still working out of my system.
As for everything else I feel fine, slightly nauseas, exhausted, but no pain. The diet blows and every time I eat jello I can't help but think of that old jello commercial with Bill Cosby. Soup tastes good but, at 5 calories it doesn't do good with my 5'9" 210 lbs body.
I must saying finding these forums has given me so much hope and helped with my anxiety problems allot. It hasn't been even a week for me yet but, for all worried about their procedure, just hang in there. It looks like most of this is a sit and wait, which will vary from person to person. Just remember the best way to healing is a positive attitude through. You almost have to will yourself through it, it seems.

Panicky Survivor - Thanks for sharing your experience.
- So, this throat swelling was because of the esophyx instrument I am assuming - that did some damage when it went in and during the procedure? So, does your doctor think this swelling will go away with the steroid and time?
- Are you feeling reflux free though?
- Did you have a hiatal hernia at all? Did the medicines not help you?

-yeah the swelling was from the instrument and I think it stretches and slightly scares your throat but, the TIF surgery is better than the Nissen(sp) as its recovery time is better and you don't end up with the bloating that often comes with Nissen surgery. At that's what my surgeon explained to me. DO NOT TAKE Medrol that crap has thousands of serious side effects and nearly cost me my life or so it felt. Better to go with something like Claritin. I took that when I had Hives and it reduced the swelling better than the three mess I was on.

-As for being reflux free time will tell. I do have a on and off feeling of needing to burp and can't. All I can think is it is what my body was used to and my body just needs to adjust

- yeah that Hiatal hernia was part of it, also had some laparoscopic surgery as well for a small tear in my stomach. As for the meds. they helped but my condition was progressing and my surgeon/doc showed me pictures of the problem and explained how without treatment at the stage I was at, I was at high risk for developing esophageal cancer. So with that terrifying thought I decided surgery was the best.

-also had stomach repair surgery which repaired a small tear in my stomach and aside from 4 stitch marks I don't even notice that part. So the hospital I was at was pretty crummy but, my surgeon was excellent.
