Hi! My name is Ashley and I came across this board recently. I am hoping someone can give me some suggestions.  Here is my background:
In July 2011, I woke up in the middle of the night with an incredible cramping/burning/sharp pain directly in between my ribs.  The pain was so sharp that I was unable to sleep.  I thought it was gas, so I took Gas X, which did nothing at all. about 8 hours later, the pain began to subside.
This continued happening every few weeks, but very sporadically. I would go for a period without any symptoms and then all of the sudden it would be extremely painful.  I even began throwing up my food.
My doctor suggested that I take Omperozole, which I did for 2 weeks. During the time I was on it, I began to feel better (But I wasn't sure that it was the medicine since I had gone for long periods of time without any symptoms before).  I stopped taking the Omeprozole and the symptoms started again. My doctor suggested I go back on.  I was on Ompeprozole for about a month and saw my first GI in October 2011. My doctor had suggested I have an endoscopy, but after speaking with the GI, he said that endoscopy's often times do not show anything. So he suggested i just continue on the Omeprozole.
I was taking the Omeprozole consistently, and started to have flare up symptoms once again. When the symptoms were present, I literally felt like dying. The pain mainly resides right inn between the rib cage and normally right underneath the left rib cage. I am CONSTANTLY burping and after I eat, it feels like the food is kind of stuck and I can easily regurgitate it. The symptoms ALWAYS occur at night, about 5-7 hours after I eat (I have been on a very strict diet and do not eat things high in acid, caffeine, chocolate, etc.) I could eat the same thing two nights in a row and one night have a terrible episode and the next, have nothing wrong at all. I also  get to the point where I throw up uncontrollably.
I have used a journal to keep track of the foods I eat and the things I drink and there is absolutely NO pattern. I don't eat for SEVERAL hours before I lie down. Pretty much I feel like i'm doing everything I SHOULD Be doing, but the symptoms continue even on the medication. My doctor put me on Dexilant 60mg about 10 days ago and it does not seem to be helping...
I have an ultrasound next week (to look into gall bladder, although my symptoms don't seem to suggest this) and an endscopy in two weeks.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am only 27 and am scared that this may be a long term battle.
Thank you

Welcome to Healing Well.

Have you raised the head of your bed yet? If not try raising it about 6 to 10 inches. This helps keep the acid and such down where it belongs. Maybe asking your GI about carafate. It coats the esophagus and stomach and can help ease the pain in some people.

I would ask for a PH study also. This will show what is going on in your esophagus. It measures the PH of anything in your esophagus and tells how often it happens.

Take care,
