A couple of days ago i woke up from a nap with some real bad stomach pains in the upper abdominal area. These pains feel like someone is stabbing me. really sharp pains. I dont have any pains in the chest or throat or anything like that so i don't believe it is the acid reflux but of course im not a doctor. They took x-rays and blood work and everything came back good. I really want to know if anyone knows what this is because it is some of the worst pain i have had in my life. i can not walk when this hits me.

austin-

Welcome to Healing Well.

Sorry you are having so much pain. Do you have access to a GI doc? If you do I would see them and explain what is going on. There are several tests they can do to see if it reflux or not.

Not knowing your age, really doesn't matter though, have you been tested for heart issues? P

Hey Austin,

Welcome to HealingWell :)

It sounds (to me) like an esophageal spasm. They can be horrendously painful at times. Esophageal spasm can be triggered by really hot and really cold drinks to you'll have to watch that.

Also, you haven't said if you followed up with your regular doctor, which is really important. He can properly diagnose and treat them, if that is what they are (or he can properly diagnose something else). Did they take the x-rays while you were having the pain? From my understanding they might be able to see the spasm this way. They can also see them during barium swallows.

Please feel free to peruse our forum for others posting with similar symptoms. I hope you find help and answers here!

Thanks ashley. They did not take the x-rays while i was in pain. it was about 20 minutes after the pain had gone away. I cant really find out what is triggering it. The only thing is that when i am walking around or sitting up it hurts alot more. it doesnt bother me to much when im laying in bed. And bill you asked about my age. I am only 20.

Hey Austin,

Your doctor could have been talking about a few different meds, called Proton-Pump Inhibitors, or PPI's for short. They stop your stomach from making too much acid in hopes that it won't splash up into your esophagus and bug you. They are Pantopazole (Somac, Protonix), Omeprazole (Prilosec, Losec), and Esomeprazole (Nexium). The OTC names change depending on where you are.

You can definitely try taking PPI's and see how you feel. Are you in the US? If so, maybe look up the new health care laws as they might help you. I know for sure in my home state (California) there were programs in almost every county to help people under 21 with no insurance. It doesn't hurt anything to call the hospital billing/insurance department and ask! :)

Take care, and keep us posted.
