Alrighty guys, back in August of last year, I had gotten off from work around lunch time and was starving, getting ready to hit the road and visit a friend. I stopped at the gas station, got beef jerkey, a soda, and cigarettes. Great Combo!!! All of a sudden after the jerkey and two cigs, my heart started to beat out of its chest, like I was having a heart attack. It was the worst thing I have ever experienced. I quickly pulled over and sat there to try and relax for a few minutes.

I was a nervous wreck the rest of the evening thinking my heart was gonna explode, which it didn't....but ever since, my GERD seemed to have kick itself into FULL gear that very day.

A little history. My father has heartburn and I've always had it too..just not this bad. I am a heavy eater, well...was anyways. Wings, chicken, beef, etc etc. I drank a lot from 21-22...and I started smoking this past March but quit two weeks after this episode.

My question is: Can GERD set in and just HAPPEN like that? I constantly and always have popped tums, but it seems to be worse now.

I have had a few mini-sodes of the chest pain/heart racing since then and am CONSTANTLY belching. It never stops. And after I eat....belch belch puke belch. Its gross. I can literally bring up what I just ate if I wanted to....and sometimes I have to for relief.

I am on Pantorprazole x 2 a day and it helps with the acid, but not the indigestion.

Symptoms : Back/Shoulder Pain, Sinus Infection, Ear Pain, Chest Pain, Constant Belching, Fatigue Sometimes, Trouble Breathing (or so it seems), Abdominal Pain and Rubbing....etc etc.

ANY HELP INSIGHT OR ADVICE BEFORE MY GI APPOINTMENT WOULD PUT MY MIND TO REST A LITTLE. THANKS GUYS.

PS. IM 23, MALE, 5' 4", 160 LB...

Hey Jim,

Firstly, welcome to HealingWell. I hope we can give you some answers!

I'm sorry to hear you've been suffering. Have you read up on other things that can help you alleviate GERD symptoms? Like not lying down for 3-5 hours before bed, avoiding trigger foods, etc?

I had had heartburn VERY rarely (only enough that I could identify it) until one night I ate spicy stir-fry and ended up with stomach pain so intense that I called an ambulance. After that, I had heartburn at least once a week and it just escalated from there.

If you're going to a GI doc, I (personally) think it's a great idea to keep a food and symptom diary. It sounds tedious, and it can be, but at that point you have cold hard evidence of how you feel and what you eat to not only show that you're trying, but that your belly isn't cooperating with you. You can also prepare a list of lifestyle changes you've made, so when he says, "Try this and come back in a month", you can save yourself some time and suffering and tell him you're a step ahead of him.

Also, a million congrats on quitting smoking! I am so happy to hear that. Good job to you :)

Take care, and please feel free to ask ANY questions you may have,
Ashley

Thanks Ashley!!! I have done A LOT of reading on GERD and LPR and Acid Reflux. It just seems to never go away. My ENT said it was 4-6 weeks before any real signs of success would show.

Tomorrow I am signing up at the local, small town gym and gonna start working out again. I never had ANY of these problems two years ago when I was up by 530, in the gym by 6, and at work by 8...I took a lazy retail job in a crappy old mall and smoked and ate nothing but mall chinese food or Chik Fil A on a DAILY basis...Certainly not a recipie for success...

Anyways thanks again! I appreciate it
