I need some help from you all.
I have been having some strange symptoms for about
2 years that I can't seem to tie down.
This all started about
2 years ago. I suddenly had a lot of mucus in my throat and I could never get it clear.
I have never had a ton of heartburn or at least not a significant portion of the time.
Episodes of mucus in the throat would rotate in a cycle (2 months present, 2 weeks off - repeat). I did have the occasional wake-up from sleep in a panic with the feeling that I had aspirated something or my throat was full and I could not breath (scary stuff).
I have been to my ENT (I have mild allergies normally contained via Claritin or other), my GI doc (he prescribed Acpiphex) and a pulmonary doctor.
The ENT said I have a little post nasal drip but it wasn't likely the cause. He was the first one to put me on Aciphex. Next was the GI doc (after symptoms did not go away).
The GI doc basically told me I was out of luck and needed to continue to take the PPI meds in hopes it would fix the issue. He suggested a scope which I have *not* done. Shortly after I left the GI doctor my symptoms went into what I call remission for a month so I did not schedule the scope.
After a while my symptoms returned and I also began to have some wheezing in the chest occasionally which scared me a bit. I then went to a pulmonologist who performed a lung function test and a chest xray. My lung function was 124% of normal so he ruled out non asthma type breathing problems. Since I have allergies he put me on an Asmanex inhaler once a day at bed time. Shortly after I went on the inhaler I went into remission again.
Now, approximately 1 month after seeing the pulmonary doc my symptoms are back with a vengeance. At night I feel like I am going to drown from the mucus in my throat and am constantly trying to clear it out. I am MISERABLE. I don't have any wheezing but the need to clear my throat is constant.
I have a follow-up appointment with the pulmonary doc this week but I am not confident I will see any improvement based on his recommendations.
I am considering going back to my GI doc and asking for stronger meds, a scope or something more drastic to fix this issue.
Anyone have any advice as to where I should go next? It seems like my doctors are being far too conservative with their approach. I.E. they don't understand that this is ruining my life and I would do anything to stop these symptoms.
