Hiya all,

Just a quick question. Any of you get shoulder pain post Nissen this long after? It's been over 5 months now, and every third or fourth night, the shoulder pain returns.

Is it unusual to get it at this stage. I haven't been back to a doc in over 4 months now as I am loving the freedom of not suffering and don't think it is anything to be concerned about, just an irritated Vegas Nerve as you all have enlightened me. I'm sure it must be something particular I eat, or if I overeat. But I just haven't been too bothered in diarising it all to see what causes it. Again, loving the freedom of choice too much to actually spoil it now worrying about what I should avoid. I'm thinking it could be red meat, fat... But I'm not sure.

I'm interested to know if any of you still have the shoulder pain fromtime to time, or do you think it too will pass for me as well. I hope so. But if this is the price to pay, I'll take the little pain over reflux anytime!

I hope you all are doing well, and if not, will hastily get better. Remember, there are experts out there that do know what they're talking about, so as long as you find one that you can trust, listen to them!

Good Stuff...

Hi Darryl

so pleased to hear that your recovery is going well. I agree the freedom of eating anything now is great.

I am 7 1/2 months post op & yes I get shoulder pain from time to time also.
It sometimes appears after I have eaten a heavy meal or if I get a bit bloated but it passes quickly so I don't worry to much because I know it is just nerve irritation & not something serious. I have found since my op that I cannot eat eggs. Whenever I do I get intense pain under my left side ribs like a large air bubble & diarrhea but thats the only food I have trouble with. I can eat anything now without any problems & I can burp ok so that helps too.

I hope this pain doesnt cause you to much concern & you continue to do well.

Take care

Lynda

I am 4 months post nissan(the second one I have had), and my shoulder has started hurting when I eat a meal. I don't eat alot at one time either.

It used to do that before I had any surgeries and only when I overate. I don't know what is going on now!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought this second surgery was going well. sigh

Hiya,

Yeah, thanks Lynda, the pain doesn't last too long, so I am not too concerned... That's why I say I'd like never to return to my Doc concerning GERD and Nissen ever again! Lol, that's my wish anyway. I love my eggs, but I think the only thing I limit to the minimum is bread.

Lenijane, sorry to hear about your problems. So you don't think it was surgery related? I never had the pains before the surgery, so I'm sure mine is 100% vegas nerve irritation. Have you asked your Doc what it could be, I'd be interested to know. Is it also on the top of your left shoulder?

Hi Darryl,

Is the shoulder pain on both sides or only one side?

I had Lap NF about 10 days ago. For the first two days I had should pain....it was an odd feeling like as if I exercised my shoulders or did shrugs....it was a muscle sore like feeling. My surgeon said I would feel this from the vagus nerve irritation so I believe you're right with that regard.

I currently do not feel any pain in my shoulders anymore. The only thing I'm dealing with is a sore throat/mouth. I dealt with LPR for about a year so I'm hoping time will heal this area.

I hope you feel better.

just on the very top of my left shoulder and it is when I eat a meal. It just started, so haven't figured it out yet. It may be that I am scrunched up in my chair. I will try eating at the table or standing up, and see what happens. I think it is trapped gas. May have to take beano or gasx before eating???

Hey Max and Len,

Ja, it is or could be trapped gas and is common shortly after surgery. For most it subsides shortly afterwards, but for some it lingers a couple of months. But that's why I wanted to know do people still experience it this long afterwards. I'm coming close to the 6 month mark! Hope you guys are part of the normal club and that it passes soon.

Max, I wouldn't describe it as muscular pain - I don't know, it's more of an intense pain right on the tip of your shoulder. Like, on that bone that sticks out in front. But then it could be slightly different for everyone.

Good luck in your guys recovery. It is a process and it does take time, so be patient with it!
