Hi Guys:

I am hoping that someone might be able to give me some advice for my cousin.  She had the surgery on November 24, 2011.  She threw up quite a bit after the surgery on a number of days/weeks.  She was still doing good even with the throwing up.  For two and half months she didn't have any heartburn or reflux happening.  She couldn't stop thanking God for giving her life back.  She ate almost everything...however, about two weeks now she has been getting terrible heartburn (worse than before she had the surgery), the constant burning is at her esophagus and throat, she burps constantly and not only does it smell bad but it burns her when she burps.  The burps also taste bad.  She has a tremendous amount of gas even though she can burp freely.  She is getting a lot of pain at her wrap site.  She sometimes get a pain on her left side under her ribs.  She eats very little consisting of mainly soups.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please.  I ran out of suggestions for her.  She was taking probiotics and was feeling fine with it but this came up all of a sudden.

I am thinking that her wrap may have slipped.  In that case, can it cause the constant burping, smell and taste.  She called the surgeon who is sending her for a barium swallow, however, that is going to take a few days, if not weeks.

I am open for suggestions please.

Hi Cindy,
That doesn't sound good at all.  I'm glad she'll be getting some testing done.  As you know, I had a lot of concern about her nearly constant retching and vomiting during her early recovery.  You just can't do that without causing some problems at the early stages of recovery.

Is she still retching and vomiting?  I'm thinking she has a sensitized vagus nerve.

I hope she can get things straightened out without a redo.  Perhaps it is all caused by irritation, and will get better on its own.
Give her my best.
Fingers crossed.
Keep in touch!
Denise
