So .. just trying to understand if this is common among GERD patients:

I used to get symptoms daily and constantly. Now in the last few weeks, I've been getting them sporadically - like - every other day or two - for may be 5-6 hours a day. My symptoms don't seem to be triggered by foods. When I don't have the symptoms it is not that I feel completely normal though - it is only that the symptoms feel reduced during those times.

I know that with GERD the symptoms wax and wane and are quite different for different people .. but just trying to understand if others experience similar symptoms?

My symptoms are mostly heartburn, rising/burning sensation in the chest and bitter. acid taste in the mouth. Throat symptoms have mostly gone now - but sometimes experience some sensation once in a while.

To remind everyone - I can't take PPIs/H2s (take H2:pepcid-ac once in a while). Mostly take tums, maalox etc.

I guess I am one of the more fortunate ones as I take the PPIs and my GERD is controlled well by the med.  I know you have posted often here in the forum but I cannot remember if you have tried any alternative GERD treatments that may be safe for you ?
Herbal remedies sometimes used for GERD symptoms include licorice, slippery elm, chamomile and marshmallow.
Techniques to calm stress and anxiety may reduce signs and symptoms of GERD.  Before trying an alternative treatments do check with your Dr.
Aren't you scheduled for surgery on March 2nd ? That is just a week away.

Thanks Kitt - Yes, I've tried several of the herbal and alternative treatments. Some of them help but none provides reliable, consistent symptom relief.

Yes, I am scheduled for TIF next friday. However, I may still run into an insurance situation (I will get some more clarification tomorrow).

I have a baseline of symptoms whilst on a ppi, that is sometimes quite liveable, but never enjoyable. Then I get frequent flare ups, without knowing what triggers them, and then it can take anything from 1 day to 2 weeks to get back to baseline. I too have significant side effects from the ppi, so it's hard to rate my symptoms or response when the treatment itself creates some symptoms!!

New stuff: GERD, Recurrent cystitis/Overactive bladder
Lifelong stuff: Food allergies/intolerance, eczema, asthma
