last summer i had a repair of a large hiatal hernia; that is all i wanted done but my general surgeon talked me into choosing a stomach wrap as he claimed that would provide symptom relief so i chose a partial wrap, troupet; a year ago, i had the world's worst heartburn, chest pain, stomach pain and nausea; well i have been suffering a hell i didn't think possible ever since and i am 9 months post op; i have had colitis with rectal bleeding, nausea, diarrhea which thank god stopped after many antibiotics; i have daily debilitating nausea that prevents me from functioning as a single mom and homeowner and i am close to puking every day and dread waking up and take protonix and zofran but it's not working and i was already on disability for 5 back herniations and i'm bankrupt; i believe i needed a hernia repair but got talked into this wrap which has ruined my life; on the day i met the surgeon, he said he would undo it if it came down to this but now he is saying he won't and claims this decision is in my best interest but i disagree; i must try to endure a manometry which i tried and paid for last year but couldn't tolerate and i must have the bravo capsule test done; surgeon says if these tests come back negative that he will not undo wrap in which case i will then have no choice but to go to a lawyer to sue for money to continue this fight; my most recent endoscopy showed another hernia but my ct and barium showed none and surgeon believes the ct and barium r correct but who knows because every doc u talk too tells u something different and the unbearable suffering continues; something is VERY wrong with this wrap and i know in my heart my diminished quality of life is from this wrap, sutures, clips/tacks but i also read undoing it may not relieve my symptoms either but i need a much better quality of life and my son needs his parent back; i am in central new york state; if anyone has any idea where i can go from here, please let me know of any specialists u know of that could help; i have NO quality of life and my son now has NO parents; looking for anyone who might be able to begin to help me turn this around; i should have insisted on a hernia surgery and passed on this very bad stomach wrap; it is intolerable to live with; my son and i thank all who could help us turn this around and god bless.

Good Morning nanc,

I am so sorry to read of your many medical conditions and I cannot imagine how awful this must be for you but please know I am here to support you.

I reread your preop posts from last year and here is what you posted:

"LOOKING FOR ANY/ALL ADVICE/OPINIONS/COMMENTS ON WHAT LIFE MIGHT B LIKE POST NISSAN; HAVE A SMALL SLDING HIATAL HERNIA WITH GERD AND HAD SOME GASRITIS AND ESOPHAGITIS BUT THANKFULLY THAT IS BETTER BUT THAT HERNIA IS NOT; I HAVE HAD SEVERE HEARTBURN, NAUSEA WITH THAT CLOSE TO PUKING FEELING, CHEST PAINS AND STOMACH PAINS AND EXERTING MYSELF AT TIMES WITH EVEN WALKING CAUSING AN INCREASE IN SYMPTOMS SOMETIMES; OTHER TIMES MY SYMPTOMS R MANAGEABLE; I TAKE NEXIUM AND CARUFATE AND FEEL STONED, DIZZY, HEADACHE AND NOT THERE MENTALLY AT TIMES LIKE CONFUSION AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN LIKE THAT EVER BEFORE STARTING THESE MEDS.; MY QUALITY OF LIFE IS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE BUT THE OP AND POST OP SOUND HELLISH AS WELL AND THE HERNIA AND SYMPTOMS MAY COME BACK; THAT MANOMETRY TEST SCARES ME; AM AFRAID THAT POST OP EVEN AFTER RECOVERY THAT MY ISSUES WILL STILL B SEVERE AND CONTINUE TO AFFECT MY QUALITY OF LIFE NEGATIVELY AS THE PAST 3 MONTHS HAVE BEEN; I HAD 2 TRIPS LINED UP FOR MY SON AND I THIS SUMMER AND I CANCELLED THEM FEELING SO BAD; THE GAS BLOAT, NOT BEING ABLE TO BURP/VOMIT AGAIN AND ALL THE OTHER COMPLICATIONS LIKE COLLAPSED LUNG AND ORGAN DAMAGE SOUND HORRIBLE AND THEN TO HAVE IT ALL COME BACK AGAIN AND THE EXPENSE; PLEASE SHARE; I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR STORY, ALL OF IT."

It seems you were very scared going into the surgery and post-op all your fears have come true.   You have mentioned you had Colitis - did you have this prior to your surgery ?  There are a variety of causes of colitis including infections, poor blood supply, and autoimmune reactions. As you referred to being on antibiotics I would guess that you had colitis due to an infection.

My best advice would be to find the best GI Physician or clinic that deals in GI disorders and start over with a new Dr., one whom you have a trust relationship with.

Keep talking with us as well.  There is 100% acceptance here in the forum and I am sure you will hear from more of our wise and caring members who have had the surgery.

Kindly,
Kitt

Nancy-

Are you able to get to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio? They are one of the top hospitals for this problem and the closest I believe to you. I can highly recommend Loyola in Chicago, as that's where they found out what was wrong with my first wrap. They also fixed it perfectly an I was symptom free for just under 2 years before a GI tore my esophagus with the scope here locally.

Take care,

I didn't have colitis before my surgery but did have constipation issues. My nausea and stomach pains r intolerable and I'm getting no where with my surgeon or gi doc yet danice went to same and trusts them completely and it's not coincidence that her and I r from same area and used same docs. Could my symptoms be scar tissue or inflammation related? I can't afford to travel and have no sitter for son but we have no quality of life anymore and I'm bankrupt. Bills r more than I can pay on disability and I only have less than a dollar til next payday of may. Do u believe in karma and god punishing us? My car needs work and mortgage company is going to take house but as a single mom on disability who will rent to us and how will we both live in a room? Yes I'm panicking but got reasons too. How could I b a little better until 8-9 months post op and why won't this stop?

Is there a teaching hospital in your area? Like a university hospital? Have you researched top doctors in your area?

There is a teaching hospital but it's not high on list for gastro disease. Nor is the hospital I chose for surgery. Just registered over phone with Cleveland clinic in Ohio. Number 2 for gi disease and closer than mayo in minn and will call dr Thomas rice there in morning to schedule appt as he was recommended and is a cardio thoracic surgeon. This wrap is causing me problems and my initial gut instinct last year was that I didn't need a wrap, only a hernia repair but surgeon said I needed one so I trusted their knowledge. Now I've already heard the horror stories that undoing this wrap may not resolve my symptoms or I could get worse but I'm suffering too much now and I think this wrap needs to go. But what if I'm wrong?

Hi Nanc,
I'm glad to hear you're going to the Cleveland Clinic.  A forum member who doesn't post much anymore went there and had nothing but glowing reviews of her experience.  She saw Dr. Rice and thinks he's brilliant.  She also felt that his entire staff was extremely supportive.

If I were to have a problem that couldn't be resolved locally, that's the place I would go.  She travels a long way to get to Cleveland Clinic, and feels it's well worth the effort.

I'm very sorry to hear about your health and financial issues.  I hope that you can find a resolution to both and that things will improve for you very soon.

I wish you the very best.
Denise
