I suffer from GERD and have recently decided to start an attempt to ween myself off of PPI's entirely. I went from 40mg of Nexium a day to 20.6 mg of OTC omeprazole a couple days ago and I have been doing pretty well. The largest change is of that to my diet. I've stayed away from the greasy and fried foods since and am thinking about cutting out meat all together. I think this would help me avoid trouble foods all together and lead to a healthier diet in general. Does anyone have any experience with the effect of a vegetarian diet with GERD?

I think going vegetarian will definitely help in your GERD symptoms. Vegetarian diet will also keep your cholesterol levels healthy if you stay away from cheese.

I have not tried vegetarian diet. I guess I love meat too much to give up :) However, whenever I eat red meats, I have trouble with acid. I try to eat white meats and fish. I may try going vegetarian once I can figure out my diet plan, and figure out my source of protein.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Hey Steve,

I went vegan for GERD and it has helped quite a bit. When I follow the diet strictly my symptoms improve a lot. I can still have a bad flare up here and there but they're gone for the most part.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Vegetarian sounds like a pretty good idea, just make sure you get enough protein. I only eat chicken and turkey now and it has helped me a great deal. I am also weening off Protonix.

I have been a vegetarian all my life.( was born into a vegetarian family) I was diagnosed with gerd 3 months ago and the main cause was acid related salad dressings etc. I was I switched to my native Cuisine and my gerd symptoms vanished. My cholesterol levels are great. I use turmeric and salt as seasonings for my veggies.

I'm not vegetarian, but these days I usually just have a few pieces of meat in my meal, mixed in with vegetables.

@ Adam
Native Cuisine - Indian

In US everyone associates Indian cuisine with hot/spicy foods. In reality that is not true.

@Raj

I wanted to lose weight and used to daily have salads with lot of dressing. After my gerd diagnosis, I am surviving on rice/ wheat bread ( chapati) and boiled veggies. Are they any alkaline Indian foods which you have regularly. I want to expand my food choices. Did you try ayurvedic medicine for gerd?

Turmeric, coriander, fennel seeds, and cumin seeds are used in Indian foods, and they are good for digestive system especially turmeric and fennel seeds.

I'd go more vegetarian, but processed soy and some brands of nuts trigger reflux and tachycardia for me. I eat a little chicken and fish if someone will cook it. I will grill fish outside only.

Beef and pork are also triggers for me. So are onions and garlic. Sulfites.

My guess you have to try to change your diet to be more alkaline (veges, fruits, spirulina etc) not necessarily become a vegan..And take note of beans, they can produce lots of gases.

Got to avoid strong food (onions) if you have a sensitve stomach.. Garlic is good but dont overdose.. alittle bit of garlic kills germs and strengthen your immunity :)
