After several months of dealing with severe GI distress, chest pain, ear pressure, and feeling like my throat was closing up after eating, I was finally diagnosed with esophageal spasms.  My GI doc has prescribed imipramine (and I was already of Dexilant for GERD).  I’ve been on it for two weeks now and it seems to be helping with the worst of the pain, although not relieving it completely.  My main concern, however, is that I’m still not eating normally and I continue to lose weight.  I’m under 5 feet tall and, before this started, weighed only 102 lbs.  In less than two months, I’ve dropped to 93 lbs.  I’m really only able to eat soft and bland foods, and if I eat what feels like too much, the chest and stomach pain hurts.  Even drinking a whole bottle of Boost can cause pain at times. I feel like I’m living on mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, and muffins … not very nutritious!  I wondered if anyone else has experience with esophageal spasms and weight loss – and if there are any suggestions for how I might put on some weight in a healthy way?

(As a side note, the GI does not want to put me on calcium channel blockers.  He fears that because I am so small, my blood pressure would drop to dangerously low levels.  He says the next option is Botox injections, which I am pretty ambivalent about.)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Are your spasms caused by reflux?

They're not sure if the reflux causes the spasms or vice versa, but the GERD definitely exacerbates them.

Do the spasms feel like flutters that run back to back? I have been having unusual tremors or I guess you could call them spasms around where men would have their adams apple. Then Sunday night I had a bad chest pain. This has happened before but this time it was worse. The CP started about 6 months ago. I have also lost a lot of weight but have diarrhea and hurt when I eat. I also have bad nausea. How did they find your esophageal crohns?
38 yo-Crohns since '00, Ileocecectomy in 09 with post surgical wound infection. Surgery in '10 to correct wound inf., found MRSA and staples which never dissolved from 3/09, removed a few in. of colon. Also, MRSA infections since 08. Granuloma cysts in mouth-oral surgery X2 in '00, Fistula colon 2006, Rectovaginal Fistula '08, 2 Ulcers Rectum, Joint pain, Kidney Stones, IC, Fibromyalgia, migraines

I suffered with similar symptoms for a year, difficulty swallowing and weight loss and GERD. Was told by one specialist to ignore the problem...yeah, right, as if I could do that!
Arranged for an appointment with a different specialist who determined that due to the GERD my esophagus had gotten constricted but that he could perform an esophageal dilitation to relieve the condition.
I have been symptom free now for 4 years, and I can eat everything.
Talk to your Dr. about this. Good luck.

Hi cardiac

What procedures diagnosed your issue and were you and are you on a ppi? I'm so glad you have been diagnosed and are doing great. That's really terrific!!!!!

I am having stomach issues and losing weight too but have not been diagnosed. On a dairy free diet and don't know what to eat to gain weight. I also think I have spasms but have not Been diagnosed. Any suggestions to help with weight gain would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck to everyone.

Had an upper endoscopy performed.
I am also taking 50 mg of Dexilant every morning to control GERD.
Once the GERD was under control and I became more confidant after the esophageal dilitation, I gradually was able to eat normal food without having to have it pureed. Weight gain came naturally from there.

Hope this helps.
