What happens when you do not eat? Do you still get GERD/LPR or symptoms?

Hi everyone,

I noticed when I do not eat something for a while during the day, I get this dry cough. It feels like your going to cough out your lungs or your going to throw a part of your stomach or valve. Or like a cough where you want to throw up, but there is nothing to throw up.
I tend to get this when I do not eat anything or skip a meal of the day, especially if I do not eat breakfast. For instance, I have cereals every morning, almond milk and rice cereal. Today, I opted for bread and almond butter and almond milk. I took a test for a job like at 10am and came out like 1pm and had the nastiest dry cough. After I ate, the cough went away. It was not food I ate because it happens when I eat other things. I think it is often caused by not eating in general.

Does anyone else get similar symptoms? I am not talking about a sore throat after eating or before due to LPR. I am talking about a dry nasty cough.

Or how do people feel when they do not eat for a while?

I do not have asthma nor smoke. I am also not sick with the cold, flu or have bronchitis, emphesezema and etc. It does not happen everyday, but it does happen when I do not eat.

I don't experience the cough but I get stomach irritation if I wait too long to eat. With reflux you are supposed to eat small meals throughout the day to avoid issues

I get my most horrible heartburn symptoms when I've gone too long without eating. I don't get the cough but I have classic GERD and rarely have symptoms in my throat (knock on wood).

When I first got reflux, I figured not eating when I had a flare up would be good so that I didn't piss off my stomach even more. However, the acid just sits with nothing to do and can actually become worse. When I have a flare up now, I have a very small meal (usually broccoli).

If I haven't eaten, it starts with a slight burning and then turns into pain that makes me panic. I've had to leave class and work to literally run and get something to eat.

I've started carrying snacks with me at all times. I always have an oatmeal bar with me for the times when I haven't been able to eat.

Take care,
Ashley

yeah, me too. Am at my worst first thing in the morning and I graze all day to keep symptoms at bay. I have to eat almost immediately after waking - none of this taking your tablets and waiting an hour stuff for me!!

And my handbag is full of emergency snacks!

I always try to carry a snack, but this time around I couldn't.
Reading your responses reinforces the idea that we are not all the same when it comes to GERD/LPR.

For me, it is the that nagging cough. I can wait in the morning, but if I wait too long like 3 hours after waking up, then I get that cough.

Thanks erica, Ashley and MMM

What about those with LPR?

If I do not eat, I wont get anything...just a little bit giddy? But it is best to eat within an hour of waking.

Try to have regular meals.. I'm also having LPR. Eat little meals spead throughout the day.
