I am new to having a sore throat from reflux, it has not been my typical symptom until recently (go figure, I tame the other symptoms and here is a new one!). I think I made mine worse working in the garden the other day bending over for a few hours. Anyways, I had 3 tablets of Gaviscon last night and slept upright on my sectional couch (I usually do sleep on an incline but I have been leaning on the headboard of my bed and it is killing my neck, plus I think I am sliding down) until my wedge pillow arrives from amazon. Between the Gaviscon and the sectional I think both helped because although my throat is still sore, it is much more of a mild sore than yesterday. Yeserday I was in hell, my throat was on fire. I am on Zegrid as well as Manuka honey, aloe vera juice and diet restictions also. Just thought that this may help other people. I also had chewed some ice cubes last night and garggled with baking soda. Not a fan of adding yet another medication but if it works then oh well for now.

A few people here rely on Carafate, which is said to coat the throat and oesophagus and helps promote healing. I hear it is hard to get in the UK, I don't know where you are. Don't get into the vicious cycle I have gotten into of eating menthol sweets, they seem to compound the issue in the end. Ice does help. Are you having Gaviscon Advance, as opposed to the regular? It is the only one that deals with pepsins, its somewhat more expensive but worth it.

I'm in the USA, I've heard of Carafate but I think it's hard to find here. I'm using Gaviscon Extra Strength I can't seem to find Gaviscon Advanced. I'm hoping this sore throat thing doesn't last as I have finally started getting all my original symptoms under control.

Hi,

What helps my sore throats believe it or not is Vitamin C.
Have you ever heard of ppl using Vit. C for colds?
Well, it can help kill a cold before it starts. We know that colds are accompany by sore throats.

I use it and it definitely helps my sore throat. 75% of the time it gets rid of the globus, mucus and soreness in the throat from acid reflux or LPR.

I buy the tablets so the bitterness will not burn my throat.

I take a 1000mg or 500mg.

By the way I posted something about this a while back.

Nickles,

Thanks! I will give it a try. I found Gaviscon Advanced on amazon.com, I may also try that. I am also sneezing and my nose is stuffed so there is a possibility that it may not be reflux...am going to my PCP next week to see.

You need a prescription for carafate in the states. Gaviscon advanced is only in the UK, but you can order it on-line.

thanks for all the help. I will talk to my GI about the carafate and gaviscon. Pepto could be helpful also. Throat pain is not terrible, just sore in the morning, mild through the day and sore towards the night. This throat thing in new to me, not sure why all the sudden it has surfaced. Who knows with GERD

Is the Vitamin C curing you or relieving the symptoms?

I wouldn't say "cure" because that is a strong claim.
However, I can tell you it dOes help my sore throat. Like others have said we are all different but this works for me. I have no clue why.

I personally don't see no harm in taking Vit C. Unless if you are taking major major doses.

This is frustration on my part.

There are a million things for me that relieve symptoms.

Just don't cure.

I think conducting further test with your MD or Gastro dr you should be able to find out more about your specific case. Meaning do the motility test, 24ph test, egd, and etc, that is if you have insurance.

I don't, we'll at least not anymore. I wish I could further test but only got limited test.

If you had a possible cause then you could target that cause by trying to solve it. I understand your frustration. I wish I could cure myself. I am still hopeful. I am trying some new things, so I will keep everyone posted. In the back of my head I am thinking Linx if things don't get better for me. I am just going to pay out of pocket if I have to. For now, I can only try to control the symptoms.
Diagnosed with GERD/IBS in 2007. However, my symptoms are most similar to LPR. I am still unsure of the IBS diagnosis.

Currently I am taking a natural approach to my symptoms since July 2011.

I have been suffering with a sore throat from reflux for 3 months.. I have tried just about everything I think.. even days of not using my voice, hoping it would heal... about a week ago I have started gargling with Bicarbonate of Soda 1/2 teaspoon in a tall glass of water.. It is the best result I have found.. especially before going to bed.. it seems to neutralise any acid that may be in the throat.. I do this also after meals.. Hope this helps.. :-)
