When I have saliva in my throat, it burns.

When I clear my throat, the burning sensation goes away.

Could the saliva and not the acid be the cause of the throat burn?

It makes sense.

Could the contents of saliva cause burning?

Your body relies on a series of buffer systems to keep you well, and your saliva maintains a certain pH to keep your mouth from becoming acidic.  To the best of my knowledge a dry mouth would be more prone to burning then one that is producing saliva appropriately.

Someone else may have better information re your questions.

I may have been misunderstanding what is going on in my throat.

It is possible my throat is dry and when I sallow, the saliva is relieving the burning.
