Hi since getting gerd eating food is now like a chore always worrying will this keep me awake tonight or will this make me feel bloated or cause wind and I get hung up on eating slowly so I time meself and count how many chews I take and make sure I am breathing correct etc etc, this is such a drag I cant imagine living the rest of my life like this I am sick of wanting to eat nice food but sticking to this boring acid reflux friendly stuff, I feel like an outsider everywhere I go surely this cant be the way my life is from now on. confused

I feel the same way. Non GERD people don't get it, it is easy to feel left out. Eating is def a chore, the food prep and anxiety is overwhelming. I never thought I'd ever consider surgery but it's looking better everyday ( although I'm probably not a candidate right now). Just hang in there. You could look into DR. Koufman's book Dropping Acid she has a few unique options for food. The whole thing is such a drag. I miss having beers and wings with my friends. It's come to the point where I'm starting to get very jealous of other people which was never me. I'm not excited for travel or parties anymore. I go but id rather be home avoiding all the temptation.

The typical surgery is called Nissen fundoplication where they wrap the upper part of the stomach around the lower esophageal muscle. Another option is the TIF surgery where they staple the upper part of the stomach to the lower muscle. Finally, the newest surgery is called the LINX and it is just starting to grow in the USA. They place a ring of magnetic beads around the lower esiphageal muscle to help it shut. So most likely insurance isn't covering it yet. The qualifications for these surgeries often require you to do a PH study as well as a mammotry test. There are other qualifications as well such as damage done by reflux, age. You can do a search on the site to see other people's experience with these surgeries.

@ paul

I agree with you completely on this. Its no fun :(

The anxiety and the stress takes a toll on our lives. I already lost 15 pounds( in 3 months). I mostly eat like a bird.

Me too, my husband says I eat rabbit food. I lost 15 pounds in 2 months. I'm looking forward to having one rum in water drink ( non acidic ) at my uncle's wedding.

I just need a way of staying calm before during and after eating as now I find myself getting all worked up and completely over thinking things whilst I am eating, so for example a normal pain or bit of gas or wind in my stomach before I got gerd I would just think nothing of now I am like hmmm is this going to set my stomach off then this leads to my mind going into overdrive which then leads to my stomach getting stressed which then of course leads to me getting more stressed and then a vicious circle erupts, thankfully though I have more or less got to grips with this new way of eating and thinking but if I forget I sometimes still find myself eating very fast for some reason suppose thats just anxiety and as for alcohol I just cant seem to enjoy it anymore I will literally take a mouthful then think is it worth it then think no its not worth it I would much rather eat and choose food over alcohol because after having a drink I wont want to eat anything for fear of over eating or eating something bad with the munchies so alcohol is gone for good I think me and alcohol never really got on anyway, what a life but things could be worse folks.
