I'm considering TIF procedure. After reading patients comments post surgery I'm concerned with length of recovery time, and also wondering if anyone has had trouble swallowing, tightness in chest, pain in shoulder, etc...  that hasn't resolved after 4 to 6 months? also, can you feel the implant? thank you so much for any input you can offer! :-)

Keep in mind, most people who post on message boards generally have complications so it's a bit of a biased sample. You should rely most heavily on statistics of the procedure and the experience and quality of your surgeon.

Make sure you have the proper battery of tests done before going through with anything.

I had the TIF 14 months ago. For a few days after the TIF procedure I had a sore throat and some pain in my throat. After it went away I have not had any problems. The recovery involves a liquid diet, then a soft food diet and no lifting for a few weeks. I don't remember the exact time. I took Nexium for 3 months after surgery and have been off all meds for acid or reflux since. I feel that the TIF procedure was well work the inconvenience of the recovery.

My understanding is that the TIF is not an implant. A fold is created around the LES to reduce the reflux. Plastic staples hold the fold in place until tissue grows to hold the fold. I do not feel the staples nor the fold.

One problem I had was the diet depended on dairy products. After the diet I continued consuming dairy and had an upset digestive system. One day I read about lactose intolerance and realized that the dairy may be a problem for me. I greatly reduced my consumption of dairy, starting taking probiotics and my digestive system improved over the next couple fo months.
