5 weeks postop today. Have been doing incredibly well. Able to add more foods to my diet but tend to stay on the softer side even though doc said to eat normally, except steak. Today I had my usual breakfast which is a protein shake. I have been doing this since right after surgery. For some reason it has resulted in severe chest pain like something is stuck. Does this end up happening frequently to others. For no reason you just end up with chest pains like you ate something you shouldn't have. I have tried walking it off but that isn't helping. Two steps forward, one step back!!

Hi Deb,
Your wrap is still healing and adjusting, and sometimes it gets just plain tired.  Also, if your protein drink is too cold, it can spasm.  I found that when I drank very cold things I'd get some painful spasming.

Don't worry...at your early stage of recovery it's normal.
I'm glad to hear you're doing well! Keep up the great work!
Happy healing,
Denise turn

Deb, are you drinking through a straw? Maybe a little lactose intolerant? A gas bubble can feel just like a heart attack. The heart is right next to the stomach.

I had moderately severe chest pain for 2 years post-op. I still have pain because the stomach was again pushed partly through the diaphragm, although not as bad as pre-op. A different doc in my stomach doc's group insisted he wanted to do a scope and dilation. I left as soon as possible. No was I was going to get stretched, and he insisted he would do that whether I said no or not! I don't want to get worse! I have a weak swallow from polio and dilating isn't going to cure it because the nerves are dead.

The pain doesn't last too long and it doesn't happen all the time. I guess I am one of the lucky ones as some people still seem to have problems even after surgery. I will say that I have not had any heartburn or reflux since the surgery and not on Nexium, Zantac, or Tums since surgery. If watching my diet is all I really need to do then so be it!! I do find that when the pain starts and I take Gas-X it does provide a lot of relief, not sure why because I really don't think it is gas, but it works!!

Hi Deb,
Hey, whatever works!  Glad to know that overall things are going well.
Things take time...remember 6 months for most of the healing and a year for the rest.  It sounds like a long time, but it goes by fast.
Best wishes,
Denise turn
