Will those here with GERD answer my question: Curious on how long your "flares" last.

I am curious when you talk about having a flare.  How long does this last?  Also, when not in a "flare" do you have any heartburn or uncomfortableness?
I am not currently taking any PPI's.  I have been taking a Zantac every now and then, but I don't really think it helps.  It seems that I feel these uncomforable chest feelings every day and occasionally off and on, it hurts to take a deep breath...almost like asthma or something which I've never had and I'm 50 years old.  I don't know if this helps, but I', 5-10, 138 lbs female, so excessive weight is not my problem.

I got a flare up because I wasn't watching my diet as well. It has calmed down as I have watched my diet. Chest tightness or pain is common for GERD. Try changing your diet and lifestyle and see if you notice a change. Chewing non mint gum has been a savior for me, your saliva helps neutralize the acid. Deep breathing has helped to control stress which aggravates symptoms.

I have been struggling with something very similar to this but none of the doctors I visit seem to give me a concise or clearly defined answer. I have a terrible diet (from what others tell me), I enjoy beer and bourbon, and I smoke on occasion. There are nights when I wake up and have a heavy burning sensation in my throat and I constantly have intense chest tightness/pain. Doctors gave me omerprazole but said that I did not have reflux disease or anything of the sort, just that my stomach produces more acid than usual. Any ideas?

Erm...... have you tried not having the beer & bourbon?!

To answer the original post:

I have GERD plateaus which are not joyous occasions but life is liveable.... not fun but manageable. Then I have flare ups, which can last anything from 1 day to 1 month. I usually eventually get back to the plateau but never seem to get to a place which is better than that.

I've been trying to keep track of how my GERD waxes and wanes. On a scale of 0-5 where 0-5 are low-to-high levels of symptoms I experience, I feel I get patterns such as these:
1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 5, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 5, 5, 1, 1,1,1,1,5

So basically I never really have full relief from the symptoms. However, I get good days: the 1s .. not so good days: the 2s .. and some days are bad: the 5s - and this happens quite regularly (so its not occasional flareups .. but bad days show up once or twice a week).

Again, I can not tolerate either H2s or PPIs. On the "1" days, I feel I should not go in for the surgery while on the "5" days I desperately want to. This has been really confusing and frustrating.

It's so frustrating because the symptoms change even if you are nit doing anything different.
