Thank God my husband heard me the two nights it happened I was choking on my own body fluids! He rolled me over and it all spilled out! Well afraid of drowning in my sleep I am staying awake but starting tomorrow night I will be having an aide every night sit with me while I sleep. There is no cure no medicine nothing that can stop this from happening.
Has anyone else gotten to this stage?

Hi mrsbabblebritchless,
Are talking about reflux that is entering your airways?  If so, there is a fix...you can get a Nissen fundoplication to tighten the LES.  That will effectively keep the stomach contents from refluxing at high volumes and entering your lungs.
Have you discussed this possibility with your doctor?
Sorry to hear you're struggling!
Good luck,

Hello and welcome to HealingWell.  Reading your post was very alarming and I too am wondering if you are referring to GERD or to CHF which sounds more like what is happening.
Perhaps if you would not mind sharing a bit more info that would help us with giving you input.  I am glad to know you are having an aid stay with you.

what is CHF? It is fluid coming up and I choke on it. Happens all day long but when I am awake I can get through it.
Doctors say I have a yeast infection in my esophogus. How the hell does that happen? I also have yeast infection in my mouth. I am thinking it is from the stupid steroids I had to take cause it was right after them that all this started. I have end stage emphasema and I choke and cough from that the worst and so some of my choking in my sleep is reflux but some is also my COPD hacking and choking.

Fungal infections in the mouth and throat are one of the most common side effects with orally used steroid sprays, I learned about that while researching allergic reactions in the esophagus with my doctor. The steroid sprays they use for that are the same as the ones they use for lungs, just a modified way of ingesting it. The only way to avoid it is to wash your mouth immediately after taking the steroid, but even that is not always 100%.

As for choking, I used to choke while sleeping at night too. One of the biggest things that helped was sleeping on my side and never my back. It made a huge difference.
