Qucik bit of history:
I've been dealing with acid reflux since about late Jan/early Feb. It started with like a throat clearing issue so I started taking PPI's because I googled and thought it was LPR. Well, the PPI's made me feel worse, gave me that lump in the throat feeling and caused me a lot of bloating. Went to doctor and he said if the PPI's are not working, your problem is not acid.

Okay, so I had an endoscopy a couple of weeks ago and saw my GI doc yesterday. I really love this doctor and trust him to the highest level, however, I don't know if I agree with him from my appt yesterday. I hope that I don't bore people with my explanation but I feel like I have to explain to get valid opinions.

He said that everything looked perfectly normal. He said that I had a VERY MILD gastritis but other than that, everything normal. I asked him if I had a hernia and he said no. I asked him if my LES was loose and he said no. I'm really confused by this though because ten years ago, I had an endoscopy (my gallbladder was causing me terrible reflux although we did not know it was my gallbladder acting up at the time). Anyway, that doctor noted that my LES was very loose. That cleared up and for 8 years, no problems at all with reflux. Then in 2009, my gallbladder starting acting up again and I had another endoscopy by another GI and he commented that my LES was loose too. So, I had my gallbladder removed finally and then no reflux in just a few months ago.

My GI doc said that he saw no signs of reflux during the scope. He said that when people have reflux, it's pretty evident during the scope. I have been having pain while taking a deep breath lately but no wheezing or anything like that. He said it could be my trachia that is giving me problems and is referring me to a pulminory doctor for evaluation. He said the trachia runs along the esophogus and could be making me feel as though I have reflux...

On one hand, some of this makes sense, but on the other, I still think...no..this is reflux. I do not get any burning with my reflux. I get an uncomfortable feeling in my chest like something is sort of stuck or something. Also, then there is the periodic pain in my chest while breathing when I feel like it's acting up. Also, yesterday as I was leaving the doctor office, I started burping and thought "dang....this is reflux...not my traichia!". Then, on the other hand, I think PPI's don't work for me and actually make my symptoms worse...so maybe this isn't reflux... Then, why would two different doctors comment about a loose LES and now it's tight?? Does a bad gallbladder cause a LES to get loose and then retighten? I JUST DON'T KNOW about ALL OF THIS!!!!

Asthma and Lung issues do run in my family. I just don't feel like I've ever had any issues with them. I am femail, 50 years old 5-10, 138 lbs.

Sorry to be repetitive to some of you...I feel like I need to give my whole case history every time to give the whole picture.

Thank you! eyes

How about trying Ranitidine (Zantac) and see if you have the same side effects as PPI? They do similar things but work differently so it would be worth a shot.

You might have a damage epiglottis from the acid. Ask for a modified barium swallow to see. Try doing this when you have swallow issues: Place your chin on your chest and do two forceful swallows everytime you feel that tickle in your throat. See if it helps you.

Hi Joy:

I don't have swallowing issues...just a constant, uncomfortable feeling in my chest.  And occasionally, I get burpy and stuff... I think this is acid reflux even though nothing showed in my endoscopy.

And, I wish I wish that I could see my doctor again.  I don't have another appt until August and he is so very busy that I highly doubt I could get in early.  I can't understand why previous tests showed a loose LES 10 and 2 years ago (and no reflux at the time) and now, my LES appears normal and now I have reflux???

Can an LES tighten up?
