I was on Prilosec for about 5 weeks and all my GERD symptoms subsided!!!  I beleive it was even helping to heal my esophagus and stmoach inflammation.  But shortly after starting it I got a very sore throat and swollen glands/lymph nodes under my chin and neck.  I stopped it immediately because this side effect really scared me!!!  I am still waiting for them to go down!!

After reading all the prescribing info for the PPIs I found this is an uncommon side effect of all of them and I am afraid I won't be able to tolerate any PPI!!!  Any suggestions?

I'm not sure about Prilosec because I never took it however I do know that not all medications are alike even though they take care of the same symptoms. I was on Nexium for a while and could not tolerate the nausea. I thought that if I took it a while it would go away however it did not. My doctor then prescribed me Prevacid and I have not had any complications with it. Since they are both PPIs, it goes to show that the formula of the drug is what makes you have the effects, not the purpose.

Have you asked your doctor to maybe try another one?

Has anyone had lymph node/ gland swelling from their PPI??  It is usually the neck nodes involved I believe.

Hi Tyboyz. I also had lymph node swelling from Prilosec. As dbab said, perhaps you should try another one. I am on Nexium and not having that side effect.

Oh Lady, I have never been so happy to see someone else have a side effect of a drug!!!! My doctor thinks I'm crazy. Would you mine if I asked just a couple more questions?? How long were you on Prilosec? Where were the swollen lymph nodes, neck chin, etc?? Did they go down on their own and how long did it take??? I am sorry to be a bug but I have been very concerned that this might have been a bigger problem (since my dr said he had never seen it). I'm also a little confused that Nexium doesn't give you that same effect since they are supposed to be basically the same formula but I am happy to hear it!! Any information you can give would be great!!!! Please feel free to tell me to stop bugging you!!! Thanks again

Hi Tyboyz. I'm sorry, actually I had the swollen neck thing on Protonix, not Prilosec. These drugs are not the same ... their goal is the same, namely to decrease the effectiveness of the acid pumps in the stomach. The potential side effects of all of these drugs are so numerous it is impossible for any doctor to be familiar with all of them. Each individual is different which is why one med works for one and not for another and one gets side effects on one and not another. Truthfully I don't know if the swollen throat was a side effect from the protonix or if it was the GERD and the protonix wasn't working well enough. All I know is that with the Nexium my throat is a little better and I hope it continues to heal. Perhaps ask your doctor to take you off the Prilosec and try something else and see if the lymph nodes go down. Trial and error seems to be the only approach with the meds for GERD. Good luck!

Thanks Lady!!!  I stopped the prilosec 15 days agao and thought the nodes would go down but they haven't and of course that is scaring me!!!  They are in my chin and neck.  I had reflux and inflammation that went untreated for a few years and did not have the swollen nodes so I don't think it is my reflux that is causing them.  Maybe I will try another ppi and see what happens.  I know I am being a real pest but I was wondering if your swollen nodes caused you any problems - like soreness or pain??  Was your doctor concerned about them??  Did they go away completely with the nexium??  Again I am sorry for so many questions I just wish I could figure out exactly why I have them to relieve some of this anxiety which doesn't help anything!!!  Thanks for your help!!

Was the swollen throat actually caused by swollen glands or lymph nodes??

You are not being a pest ... this can be scary stuff! Yes, my throat was very painful .- on the inside as well as to the touch on the outside. The doctor did not seem concerned at all (not that that helped me much). I really feel you should ask about trying another ppi. I'm not promising it will work, but it can't hurt. By the way, with your throat issues (generally referred to LPR), do you also suffer heartburn issues? For LPR, the generally accepted effective dosage is 2x a day for about 6 months for resolution (if you google LPR and GERD you will find many boards and this seems to be the gererally accepted wisdom). Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Lady for helping me again!!!  It seems that my heartburn and throat pain stopped with the Prilosec but I still have neck pain and swollen nodes in my neck and chin.  My family doctor is saying to give them more time to go down but I have never had glands swollen without being sick before so it is making me very nervous.  I think I have even noticed that the ones in my chin swell while I sleep and decrease while I am awake - it just keeps getting stranger!!!

I have had very weird side effects from Omeprazole (prilosec) wich are backache, groinpain and - here's the really weird one - tender breast tissue (I'm male). After looking on the insert it appears that, as well as listing the other side effects, PPIs are some of the listed drugs that can cause Gynecomastia (breast enlargemet or tenderness in men). Although these side effects are stated as rare, a family friend suffered similarly with the same drug. I'm now on Zoton (2 weeks) and the side effects are still there although just slightly better. All PPIs can have the same effects but also it took at least a month for the side effects to kick in so you have to hold it out and see. I know it's worrying, as my side effects are also possible signs of testicular cancer! But I had a check and the doc said all is OK down there!
My advice - although irritating - is to be patient - the systematics of drugs can take along time to get out. . .at the end of the day it's best to listen and go through it with your GP, as too much internet info is confusing/worrying/etc/etc. . .as I've found to my detriment!

I have swollen neck glands on an irregular frequent basis but have had for much longer than I have been on the Nexium. My docs don't seem to worked up about them, all my blood tests come back within the normal range meaning no infection.

I had some lymph node swelling a few weeks back which was attribute first to a bug (my entire family was ill at the time) and then possibly to allergies. My doc did allow for the possibility that it was reflux related, as my taste buds were visible in the back of my throat. Then again, I've also been dealing with costocontritis off and on for the past three months and that brings with it swelling of the rib cage and that whole muscle group, which might also be responsible.

Typically the swelling goes away in a few days at most - usually a few hours. Still under a great deal of stress and have some anxiety as well, so it's hard to really say.

I'm undergoing an endoscopy and dilation procedure in a few weeks. Hopefully it'll come back normal.

I wanted to let others know that I also have had groin pain with Prilosec-Severe!!! Yes it works great for the acid but there are other concerns also. Lymph nodes under my arms are sore- Thought it was because I had gained weight and bra was tight, but when I stop the Prilosec it gets better. It also seems to leach out my magnesium and calcium even though I take supplements. Which is probably what causes leg pain at night.

I took Prilosec for a couple of years using the 2 weeks on method and then going off for a week or two- Then I enjoyed the fact that it worked so good that I started to take it all the time- Hence all the problems began. I can believe that this causes lymph nodes in neck as I hadn't realized until just now that when I put lotion on my neck in the morning it is slightly sore-

WELL THAT DOES IT FOR ME!!! I started Aloe Vera this morning and will use some baking soda (Bobs Red Mill, that doesn't have aluminium in it) and lemon in my water to cut down on the acidity in my body- Oh course cutting out sweets would really go a long way LOL! Good luck everyone-All the PPI's on the market seem like an easy answer and finding other ways are hard. But it gets back to the basic- sometimes the cure is worse than the problem-
