Hi, I'm new to the boards and wanted to ask a quick question.

Are some PPI's considered to be stronger than others, irrespective of dose?

For instance I was put on protonix (40mg) which has maybe helped a little, but my doctor wants me to now try Dexilant (60mg). Is this a stronger PPI or just a different one? Are side effects more serious etc.?

I don't have time now, but will give a more proper introduction and my current story with GERD, if that is actually what I have, in a post later today

Hi rores28,
Welcome to Healing Well!
PPI dosage and strengths vary from drug to drug, so 40mg Protonix doesn't mean you'd take 40mg Dexilant.  They all have unique characteristics and recommended doses.
Good luck!  Hope you're feeling better soon.
Best wishes,

Welcome to the GERD/Heartburn forum. This forum is for questions, discussions and support relating to Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD - Heartburn) and includes Causes, Complications, Diagnosis, Medical Treatments, Surgical Treatments, and Symptoms.

Denise explained the PPIs well.  I do very well on Omeprazple EC  20 mg  every morning.

Again a warm welcome and I look forward to getting to know you better.
