confused confused

Hi All:

I don't know if anyone really knows this but I've been supllimenting my ppi with gaviscon. Gaviscon does help. I have both the UK version that has no aluminum and the US version with the aluminum. I am curious if Gaviscon is safe to take long term. I'm not sure which direction I'm going with my reflux but I'm weighing my options while undergoing testing.

erica,

I have taken both, and I feel the UK version works better. These are two totally different products, the UK creates a raft were as the US stuff doesn't. I'm hoping to work on getting off the ppi's and h2 blockers, because they don't address the root cause of my gerd. Now there's the problem, trying to strenghten the les without surgery. Did you ever give the acupuncture a try?

I am still interested in accupincture but my new doctor had 4 tests he wanted me to do so that took up a lot of time between those and my jobs. I've got 2 more tests I have to do, the mamotry and ph study and after that I'll probably start accupincture. I wish they had medication to strengthen the LES. PPI meds just treat the symptoms. Gaviscon at least has the right idea with creating barrier. I'm trying not to have surgery but it's not ruled out especially as I'm you g and would like to start s family at some point, and pregnancy makes GERD worse. All of this is very upsetting.

erica,

In general, side effects caused by Gaviscon can be very severe due to the ingredient of aluminum. Long-term use of aluminum drugs can deposit aluminum in multiple places throughout the body.  It would make sense that the UK version that has no aluminum would be your best choice.  JMHO as I am not a pharmacist.  :-)

Thanks, I guess I'll be ordering from the UK. I ordered the chewable tablets this time, the liquid works but I think chewables are more convenient. Of course it takes 2 weeks to get the stuff from the UK so I'll prob have to order in bulk next time. Thanks for the heads up, I'll avoid the US version.

Its called Gaviscon Advance (UK), I ordered mine from chemistdirect.com. It took 10 to 14 days to arrive. This is the only stuff that will create a "raft".

yes, however I bought aniseed flavor to avoid peppermint flavor. It doesn't look like amazon offers aniseed flavor.

Amazon has the peppermint and I usually stay away from that but it seems fine so far. I do not know if I can manage to choke down the aniseed. Terrible falvors!

It does seem to help some , however the raft only last about 4 hours and I'm not sure if the raft gets ruined if you eat or drink inside of the 4 hours.

it does help for me as well, but again like Doggbones said, you can't or drink or the raft gets ruined so I save it mostly for after dinner or bed when I know I will not be eating anything else.

Why not just take another tablet after each time you eat or drink? If it doesn't have aluminum then what would be the harm?

I eat 4-6 small meals a day so for me thats a lot of medication to take. You certainly could take it more if you wanted but it could get costly.
