Hey Dave and 1 day,

May I give you a little background and forgive me if I'm being a wet blanket but I think you should here these stories. I had the Hill repair done 4 1/2 years ago which is an optional GERD surgery to the Nissan wrap. It's slightly more complicated which is why it's not done has often but
it's along the same system of twisting/turning the stomach, dissecting and sutures to hold it in place.
It was done by a brilliant surgeon who does this type of surgery. I'm doing great with it at this point. During my research for the surgery, I came across a young man who was a weight lifter also who was about to have the surgery. He was told by this surgeon to never power lift but he could lift weight within reason. We all must decide what is within reason. Three years after the surgery, this young man was back in having a redo. I lost contact with him so I don't know if he continued lifting weights after the redo.
Another story: I talked to a middle aged woman who had the Nissan and was doing fine after 10 years. But, it was her second Nissan because at three years, her first Nissan failed after she lifted some heavy boxes when moving.
I think we can safely determine that you both are still in the infancy of your surgery and you don't know what the tole will be on your surgery after too much lifting over a period of years.
I know also that I get sore, even now, at my surgery site if I do too much heavy exercise and sports, so I back off a few days but I always am conscious of not lifting too much weight because I want my surgery to last as long as possible. It's always a little sore after playing Pickleball for two hours.
A good surgery is a gift so please treasure it because it's not going to last forever anyway but try to make it last as long as possible.
God bless you as you both try to figure out how much is too much physical work or exercise for you after this surgery.

Anyone else care to "weigh in"?

My surgeon said it is totally fine and that I could lift as much as I wanted, that the stitches would not break. The only risk I could have is having a little bit of temporary reflux if I push myself too hard.

I just posted a new topic on this. I have a 20 lb plus grandson that I take care of, and wondering if I had some sort of supportive wrap to wear, if I will be able to lift him after a couple weeks of recovery??

Wow! I was wondering the same thing! I'm still fighting a kind of severe setback that is limiting how much, if any, exercise I can do, but dreaming about the gym and getting back into it. I thought about the low back weight lifting belts. What do folks do with repaired hernias lower down in the belly? Compression shorts up to my chest? A girdle? Suggestions anyone?

In terms of what should be avoided, I think it has to do more with maximal exertion force than it has to do with the specific movement. I've been doing a fairly tough mma-style workout (google Bas Rutten's all around workout for more info), 30 minutes of pushups, bodyweight squats, shadowboxing, sprawls, etc. etc. I do substitute hamstring exercises for the ab exercises.

No discomfort in my stomach, and I started doing this I think about 9-10 weeks out. It is a strenous workout, I often can not continue doing push ups or squats from the burn/fatigue. But it's probably different on the body than trying to lift very heavy weight. You can get in very good shape without actually using weights, just using bodyweight, so it's not necessary to move lots of weight to have a strong/attractive body.

Wow, I didn't see this until now. Yes, I am still lifting. Just had another barium swallow and it showed the wrap is holding perfectly. Actually, even better than the last time I had the barium swallow. And it was a more thorough test. Not sure how that worked.

Just remember, if you lift, wait a year after the surgery. And when you do lift, BREATHE. EXHALE when you exert effort. Take it nice and easy.

Im a very skinny dude around 120 lbs and i had the NF done in 10th of December 2015. I was told i could do bodybuilding again 3 months post surgery, which i did. My program is a classic 2 split with focus on compound exercises like: Deadlifts, Squats, T-bar rows, Benchpress, Military press, Dips, Chin-ups and pull ups. Suddenly one day i was doing dips and i could hear something pop. Now i am certain my wrap has slipped and my reflux has returned. To be honest, i had a suspicion with dips, because i feel like puts a lot of pressure in the wrap area like no other exercise. I probably need a redo, as it stands right now.

dude I feel for you, in my opinion having this nissen is life changing. I had my nissen done 2 months ago and terrified to start lifting heavy weights ever again. If you live in CA I recommend that you go to USC, for all intensive purposes they seem like they are the best and they also are experts on the linx which is alternative to the nissen. The linx is much less invasive to the nissen, but each procedure is different and specific to your case. Look to get an endoscopy from your GI doctor to determine if it unwrapped. If you heard a popping noise then most likely you did something to the wrap. Are you experiencing any other symptoms? If you need a redo, get a DOCTOR THAT KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING, THIS IS A REAL MAJOR SURGERY.

Benjawood, that sounds like an intercostal strain, which often happen with things like dips. Intercostal strains make a popping sound and are basically a tear in the muscle and cartilage that hold the ribs together. The reflux you feel could be due to the pain in that area (the esophagus interprets pain as reflux). They usually take from 2-8 weeks to heal, but could be longer.

Hey Dave234 - how's it going on long term? How much are you lifting and how well is your wrap holding up now?
I'd really appreciate a response! Or a response from anyone else who has had the surgery long term please.
