I finally went to the doctors today after having a chronic cough the past few years that lasts for a few months and then goes away only to return. The reason I finally went is about a month ago my chest started hurting ( like it was bruised) and I did nothing to it ( figured the cough did it) . Well a few days ago I noticed a lump centered at the top of my sternum ( around the sternal angle).

So he checked me out and acted like the lump was from coughing and no big deal ( which how could he be so certain without xray) and said he thinks its acid reflux and gave me some medicine and ordered xrays for my lungs but said he'd check the lump too but reassured me it was mainly for the lungs

I'm wondering now if he just told me this to put me at ease and not worry of a tumor. When i took the xray I did not drink any barium so that makes me think the xrays were not done for gerd ( never said it was for gerd just said wanted to xray the lungs...but if he thinks its gerd ..)

Lastly I really don't have many of the gerd symptoms...I have chronic cough, chest pain ( that only started a month ago and I've had this cough on and off for years), and a burning sensation where the lump is past 2-3 a warm heating pad feeling ( but again...burning last two nights out of all this time?). And from what I've read it seem gerd is worse at night...with me if I'm laying in bed ( morning and night) I have no cough whatsoever but as soon as I get up and moving I start coughing

I have more typical symptoms of GERD, such as excessive burping, regurgitation, and the feeling of a lump in my throat (no heartburn whatsoever). However, I have read that chronic cough can be a symptom of GERD, and the chest pain definitely fits the bill. I too have read that GERD is worse at night, but in my case it is the opposite. I'm fine when I lay down, even if I've just eaten. My symptoms actually seem to improve a bit. Once I get out of bed, the lump in my throat appears and the burping starts.
Bottom line: I wouldn't discount GERD at this point, though you may want to ask your doctor for further tests, such as a barium swallow or endoscopy.

Thanks for the reply...I'm really just nervous I have a tumor or something and thought it was weird he took an xray without having me drink barium

I took the xrays Thursday around noon....they said their doctor would look at it that day and send it to ky doctor. I called Friday ( yesterday) at around noon and they said they didn't receive it yet and if there was anything wrong they'd call me and if i didn't get a call everything was fine. I didn't get a call yesterday so wondering if its nothing serious or they haven't sent then to my doc yet...I don't know how long it is supposed to take
