I have been consulting with various thoracic surgeons about my very large paraesophageal hernia (entire stomach and part of colon in chest). All recommend a lap procedure, except the most acclaimed and experienced surgeon in our state, who says he only does this procedure as an open thoracotomy. He is a leading thoracic surgeon in our state and I know he has a lot of experience with this type of surgery. I sort of feel he is more "old school" and feels he has perfected his technique doing it this way. I would certainly prefer a lap surgery, but to find his level of experience, I would probably need to go to a surgeon out of state.

Anyone that has had this surgery done as an open thoracotomy, would you let me know how it went, how was your recovery, how long until you were up and around and feeling like you could function well. I am a Mom and have kids at home that I need to take care of.

Thanks,
Deb

Deb-

I had a thoracotomy for an esophageal tear about 1.5 yrs ago. It was a tough recovery for me, but I had 2 chest tubes for over a month also. Now I had my last nissen redo a year ago done as an open( vertical belly incision ) and that was an easier recovery for me than my 2 lap nissens.

Take care,
Bill
