Well I am new here and have been suffering from diagnosed GERD for about a year. Well in July I began to suffer esophageal spasms and it has been a battle since. Today is typical. I eat (I have been trying all forms of clean eating) and my food comes back up about two hours and the fun begins confused throat spasms, dizziness, and lightheadness. I am going to try Nexium starting tomorrow and I am also taking a digestive enzyme and hydrochloric acid as per my holistic doctor. She seems to think my whole digestive system is messed up and I need to fix it. However at this point I feel as if I need some type of prescription as well. I'm miserable and these spasms aren't helping. I also have anxiety issues and take Ativan as needed. Any advice, natural healing suggestions, or whatever else would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I think once you start the Nexium you will start to feel better. Many say to do this naturally but when you feel like hell you just want a quick fix of any kind! Since you have already began tweaking your diet the Nexium may be all you need(hopefully) to get on the right track. Anxiety doesn't help any but once you start to feel a bit better that may ease a bit too.

Can I just kindly point out that taking Nexium will eliminate your stomach acid, following which things should have a chance to heal, but if you then supplement the acid by taking hydrochloric acid you will be back to square one! The two methods may both be worth exploring, but are mutually exclusive. You could try naturopathy for a while and if it doesn't help, then start the Nexium. Or you could start the Nexium and see how that helps and then see if the naturopath can work with you whilst on medication. You need to do one thing at a time, other wise you won't know why you are getting better/worse.

I am not against naturopathy and formerly had some training and experience in practice. However, nothing natural I tried has ever helped my symptoms, apart from DGL and that didn't work second time around. There does seem to be a subgroup of people with GERD who get great relief from apple cider vinegar and my guess is that these people have suffered from low stomach acid. The rest of us find that apple cider vinegar is like swallowing fire and cannot tolerate it, or betaine hydrochloride which is in a lot of digestive enzymes.

There's only one way to find out which method will give you best relief, but I really do believe you can't do both at the same time!

Good luck with your experimentations!

You are so right about the Apple cider vinegar! It is like pouring vinegar on an open wound..so bad! I also tried ginger and it gave me the worst headache of my life and very mild relief for the GERD.
