I know that it is a very difficult decision, and there are some scary posts online. I struggled over whether or not to have the surgery for far too long and have some permanent health issues as a result. I had the surgery done a little over 3 years ago, and only wish I'd had the courage to do it sooner. My situation was a little different...I was having severe asthma for 5-6 years and my PCP and asthma docs both were confident that it was being made uncontrollable because of reflux. My GI doc wasn't cooperative, and I didn't push for the same reason you're hesitant. Oh well...water over the dam as they say!
Here's my early recovery journal. At the end of the journal I've written my thoughts about Nissen surgery and the failures/difficulties we see when we search the internet. I hope it's helpful:
Words of wisdom by Eckhart Tolle:
"Whatever you fight, you strengthen, and what you resist, persists.”
“Worry pretends to be necessary but serves no useful purpose”
“Accept - then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it.”
