Hi Everyone,
I am so happy I found this forum as I was calling my surgeons office every day with questions. Yes I found ouT from them Bletching after eating is normal.I am post op day 7. I have had 2 episodes after eating too much a sour taste in mouth followed by pain at Tif surgical site.I have been crushing my Prilosec and Zantac dissolving it in water by drinking it. Reading other threads here I found out the swelling and pain will be at the worst at 14 days. So I have that to look forward to next monday. Has any one drank Aloe Vera Juice finding this helpful? I did before my surgery as I could not eat solid food. Once I drank 2 oz of Aloe Vera Juice the burning lessen and I could eat. Should I continue to drink this after surgery? Are there Any good tips to ease the heart burn pain? I have been pureeding all my foods in a blender. Sticking to chicken soups. Veggies carrots, spinach , sweet potatoe, my favorite. I walk taking frequent sips of water when I am having a painful attack till it eases up. My surgery was Hiatus hernia and TIF. I had my Gall Bladder tested , it turned out ok so I didnot have to have that out. Thank you for any well needed advice. :-)

I felt my surgical site on fire today after a sour taste in my mouth. I took a little mylanta followed by ice pack to the area. Rested a while in EZ chair. The pain went away. I really felt the ice pack worked and would have not thought of it was it not for reading it on this forum. Thank you!! :-)

Post op day 8 :
Today I started out with a wonderful bowl of pureed Oat meal, Grape juice and pureed egg toast mixture I made up a few days ago when I was missing toast and eggs.

Yesterday I cooked a tasty Butternut soup recipe. Since I made so much, I froze a bunch of it in one quart freezer bags for individual servings I will be able to take to work when I go back at the end of this month.

Then after breakfast I turned up my CD player up lifting music and started walking steps for the whole CD 45 minutes. The nurse in the hospital told me to get up and walk out in the hall 4 times while I was there for me to able to discharged. So I went for it and continued this walking program when I got home. I have a German Short hair that I live with so for the past 10 years I have been on a 7 day walking program with him( Rocky). Rocky is my exercise inspiration that has kept me in good shape. I will not be able to walk Rocky on least till I am 14 days post op. Yes I have him trained very well on leash, but he could see something that triggers him to pull on. My Husband has been taking care of Rocky's walks for now.
Now to rest for a while , continue to work on mu cable knit grey gloves I am knitting for my Daughter -in -Law for Xmas.

Have a Great Day fellow GERD Troopers :-)

I'm happy that you are doing so good. Are you still getting heartburn, that is why you are still on medicine?
What made you have the surgery? Please keep us posted on your recovery, this is very helpful for us fellow gerdies.

A year ago after a big meal I was sitting in an EZ chair in our living room. I felt gush gush in my lower stomach with a sour acid taste leaving my lower sternum just burning. I went to my pharmacist told him my symptoms and he recommended Prilosec OTC for 2 weeks. Then a few weeks the gush gush happened again. I went to my Doctor and she told me I had Acid Reflux and to start taking Zantac twice a day. Symptoms calmed for a while but started back up again. When I woke up my whole sternum area burned. Went back to the Doctor and she told me to raise the head of my bed on 6 inch blocks. Take Prilosec 40 mg twice a day along with Zantac twice a day. This helped some. I was living on just apple sauce and yogert as solid food just burned going down. After doing some research I learned about Aloe Vera juice .started drinking that twice a day and could not believe how better I felt. I started eating real food again. My burning lessened and I was able to cut down on my meds. Our local Hospital held a seminar for GERD suffers to learn about the TIF operation to help control this disease. After attending that seminar I said ,I am going for that surgery , I have nothing to lose'. After the pre testings I learned I had a hiatal hernia bulging up keeping my valve from completely closing. So I had constant acid leaking into my esophagus causing esophagitus. My surgeon and I decided the TIF with the Hiatal hernia repair the best option. No heart burn today after eating smaller more frequent meals. I am feeling a lot better :-)

Post Op day 9: Oh I slept in till 9:30 am , boy did that feel good. I was up late last night watching the President debate. I am truly starting to feel stronger and better. My 4 prong holes on my belly are healed and do not itch any more. I went thur 24 hours with no reflux symptoms. So I have down pat small saucer size meals every 2 hours thur out day is working for now. In my brain I felt when I sat down for supper with my husband I would have to eat more to keep up with him finding my self feeling too full triggering reflux. Going out to drive the car for the first day . Horray!! Have a great Day fellow GERD troopers!! I am so happy to have you as friends! tongue

First day driving the car. I mailed something at the post office. Visited my Nursing Home where I work as a nurse to catch up on some mandatory meeting paper information.( still not back to work yet. )Then stopped at the knitting shop sat and talked with my knitting instructor. No I won't be going to knitting class this week. I am doing OK on my home knitting projects of gloves, finished a green and gold slouchy (Go Green Bay Packers) hat. Yes I live in the Land of the Green and Gold Packer Nation!!! Scarf and chocolate knitted dog. I did OK on my little drive, no motion sickness , no reflux in car. Felt a little weak but able to walk and move in and out of car, Walk up and down side walks. Every person who met me on the street and in places told me they have reflux and is on Prilosec too. They were all so interested in hearing about my TIF part of the surgery. Not one of them envy my having to be on a full liquid pureed diet for the next 30 days. I hope to be on ground diet by Thanks giving. Was nice to get out of house and yard to see small part of world for first time. Wonderful to be back home!! Now for a little rest in my EZ chair. turn

Post OP Day 10 from TIF Hernia repair surgery,
Woke up around 8:30 surprised no pain this morning. Ate pureed egg toast mixture I made a few days ago along with some yogurt and grape juice. Well I decided to hop my German Shorthair in the car for the ride and went to shop at our local Walmart. The main item I purchased was Liquid Centrum. I have been very bad by not taking my big honking one a day vitamin for women over 50.!! nono these past 10 days. I have been taking crushed Zantac and prilosec staining the outer shell before I drink this terrible crushed pill combination. I have enough liquid tylenol to get by as I am not in that much pain, I just take a dose before I go to bed. Crushed big Vitamins are the worst tasting ever. I did make sure I pushed my cart up and down lots of store rolls to get a good walking workout. Lots more interesting than walking in a circle path in my house for 45 minutes. It is going to be interesting If I will have increase swelling and pain by the 14th day with this TIF operation compared to the nissen wrap surgery.I did not have abdomen gas problems yet in the hospital or at home. Of course there is yet plenty of recovery time to have gas problem especially when I advance my diet in 20 more days. To give myself something to chew on I purchased "Gerber Graduates fruit and Veggie melts". They are solid but melt down to nothing to swallow. I did pick up a bag a Old Dutch Puff corn and wonder if that will melt down to nothing to swallow? At night I get in the munchy snacky mood and just love something to snack on. Thanks for any additional food snack suggestions you may have to share. It is tough to be on a pureed full liquid diet for 30 days. Have a great Day Fellow Gerdie Troopers wink Anne

Post op day 11: I advanced my diet too soon with wrong foods aggravating my surgical site causing more pain. I am back to base one on full liquids. I plan to just drink health shakes 2 ounces every 2 hours along with grape juice and of course water.I will do my little walks around the house every 2 hours too. Live and learn. a bump in the road. I am not going to try any advance new food until I see my surgeon on Oct 25th.

I baked a pumpkin pie with spices , did not put it in my blender to liquid consistency. Also I advance to Italian tomato blended with spices. Then I had a few bites of puff corn pop corn flavor. All tasted great going down , but shortly experienced surgical site burning and pain. So it I am newly learning reading this forum it is good for me to keep a food diary to not repeat these foods so early post op from my surgery. Yes I packaged the pumpkin pie, put it in the freezer till Thanks Giving. Lesson well learned I am starting to feel better now that I am back on full liquids. I made my first Banana Smoothie and it goes down nice and taste great.

Post OP Day 12:
Well I feel much better that I gave my digestive system a rest by only have 2 OZ of health shake ever hour. I also took liquid tylenol every 6 hours to control the pain. Also last night I got out my electric heating pad which shuts off automatic in 20 minutes to help ease little aches in my chest I still have.Worked well. The nurse in the hospital gave me a warm rolled up bath blanket to help control the the abdominal surgical pain in lieu of taking a PRN pain med which worked well during the night. Walking also helps control shoulder pain and other pains. So I try to walk 15 minutes in circle path in my house which controls pain greatly. tongue Rocky, my German shorthair Pointer keeps my entertained and focused. I will be so happy on Monday when I am Post op Day 14 to walk my buddy boy on leash around our little block outside. Yes I will star out slow and build up.

Yesterday my Hubby and I got our flu shots. I did call my Surgeons office to see it this was OK and they said it was alright. It is not alright to get a flu shot right before your surgery, but OK after wards. I have no side effect from the flu shot. My Spirits are good I Just love being on this forum sharing my newly first surgery experience with all of you. I also love reading others post and threads. I am learning so much form you and staying calm and relaxed about this whole new experience for me. Have a wonderful weekend. I hope your favorite sport teams you are rooting for come out on top!! turn

Anne-

You did exactly what was needed after a bad day with food. Taking a step backwards to let things calm down. Good job!
If you like pudding you could get some different flavors and have them while still unset. More of a liquid and might help to give you a variety of flavors for a snack.

The heating pad has been a huge help for me with my stomach surgeries. Sometimes I used ice as well.

Take care,
Bill

Thank you Bill for your positive response. I really do appreciate it. Yes I woke up feeling the best I have since my TIF Hernia surgery . I went back to my normal soft foods. Pudding yogurt sweet potatoes. Cottage cheese. I have been eating just a saucer cup of food and 2oz of liquid at my mini meal times. I slept the best with my electric heating pad that shuts off automatically 20 minutes. I clicked it on this morning a little as it was warm and comforting. I went to church and thanked all for their prayers for me. Yesterday I walked around our block 2 different times. One time by self. The second time with my Hubby as he handled our Pointer Rocky on leash. Felt good. Also I am doing daily weights and I am staying OK, not dropping too much. I do not need to lose weight as I am one of the lucky ones that is at a good weight. This is Post OP Day 13 for me. Tomorrow will be the DAY 14 when the surgical site swells up and might be on the painful side, but I have lots of liquid tylenol on board, ice packs and of course my heating pad to help out with the pain. Have a great Sunday Fellow GERDIE TROOPERs!! :-)

Post op day 14!! I feel good this morning, but had a tough in the middle of night waking up with sharp abdomen gas shooting pains. As I walked the pain radiated up both my right and left shoulder and neck. I did not panic as I have found this is normal from what I have read on this forum. I started walking alternating by sitting on the toilet to let gas and stool to come out. I also took some Pepto-bismol pink stuff for Nausea , heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach and diarrhea. After about hour of this walking and toileting, the pain was gone I felt relief and went back to bed. I had been eating more the past few days as I have felt good. But I have not been eating my yogurt as much so I will go back to eating a little yogurt at each meal. I feel good now no diarrhea. My digestive system is moving well. My TIF surgical area feels great with no pain or burning. turn I am very happy so far my digestive system is active and moving. My discharge instructions says ." Do Not push, pull or strain for up to 2 weeks after your surgery." This includes vacuuming , shoveling, sweeping ect. Does this mean today I can vacuum my living room and sweep my kitchen?? I hope to have a great day without over doing. I am happy our Green Bay Packers won their game this week. It always makes the start of the week brighter. :-)

Post op day 14 night:
Today was great day. I am beginning to feel stronger to do more activities. I swept the front and back porches. Walked my dog Rocky on leash on 2 walks, town side walk morning walk and out in the back field partial off leash walk in the early afternoon. Also latter I vacuumed our living room and day room. I did not move any furniture just the main areas. I did feel good eating my pureed veggies. I tried scrambled eggs and toast together pureed them in a blender with apple sauce and a few canned peaches. Added butter for better taste. Tasted great. Latter on my Hubby made a tasty home made veggie rice soup. I stuck a bowl full with 4 crackers in the blender. It tasted so good I ate the whole thing. I feel good I am finally getting an appetite to enjoy some food. The surgical pain is dull at most now so just needed one dose of liquid tylenol for pain. I will sleep better tonight. I don't feel gas pains like I did last night at this time before I went to bed. Good Night my fellow GERDIE TROOPERS. Hope every one sleeps good tonight.

Good morning GERDIE TROOPERS! Post op day 15 for me and I feel great. Just a minor level 1 of surgical site pain felt. I slept very well thur the night with no pains of gas. So being back on my 4 table spoons of yogurt with each meal is working for me. I am going out to do a little shopping, spend some time with my knitting teacher in her shop to help me out on the my first knitted dog (chocolate Lab) I am working on. In 2 days, this Thursday I will be meeting with my surgeon for my first post op visit. He will tell me my return Date back to my job. My return to my job will be light duty if I go back sooner than latter. It will depend if my job will accept me back on light duty. We will see. I am going to make a list of questions for my surgeon to ask when I see him thursday to ask.
Well have a great Day GERDIE TROOPERS.!!

Good morning Gerdie Troopers!!! Post op Day 16 for me. I am definitely moving in the right direction of healing from my surgery. I can now eat larger amounts compared to last week. Last week I could only eat one saucer full of thin pureed food, this week I can eat a cereal bowlful with small particles and lumps. Example: Apple sauce right out of a jar verses thin pureed apple sauce from the blender. I will be seeing my surgeon tomorrow am for my first post op visit to find out when I can go back to work. I am going to ask him if I can begin exercise stretchy band exercises and Balley Ball exercises that does not involve any weight lifting. I do have 2 lb and 5 lb free hand weights for down the road. My German Shorthair Pointer, Rocky has done fantastic with our around the block leash walks. Rocky is happy Mom is back to our partner walking again. :-) Of course I will ask the surgeon , When is it safe to swallow pills whole after TIF surgery? I am dissolving them in water , straining the outer shell off and drinking the horrible tasting stuff in 1 gulp mad I am greatful I do not have that may pills to swallow only TWO. My pain level is very minor at the surgical site only 2 at worst and 0 at best. Well got to go leash up Rocky to get a stepping. Have a great Day Gerdie Troopers ! turn

Post Op Day 17: I went to for my post op visit with my surgeon. He was very happy and surprised on how well I was doing. He was surprised I did not cheat on the diet by eating a slice of pizza minus the crust and that I did not have any left quad abdominal pain secondary surgical instruments. I told him I have not had any abdominal other than some at the abdominal prong sites the first week. Right now I am feeling pretty good. The good news he advanced my diet to soft ground food that dissolves some what in my mouth.I told him my biggest fear is getting food stuck in my TIF. He said soft food would not get stuck at this point. I guess that is every ones worry after having this kind of surgery about food getting stuck. I feel so bad when I read the threads of those who do get food stuck leading them to run to the ER for help. confused My answers to my questions: I can now discontinue all my anti reflux meds. NO more Prilosec OTC or Zantac. yeah I cannot do exercise band or balley ball exercises till after 6 weeks post op. I cannot do the compressions in my CPR class. I can just be an observer on Monday which I will do. I do not have to renew my card this year as I did last year and the cards are good for 2 years with American Heart. So that will be Ok. The day I can return to work on with no restrictions is Nov 19th. Scrambled eggs mixed with applesauce went down great.First food I did not put through the blender. Now off for a later walk with my Rocky. Have a great day Gerdie Trooper turn

Good morning Gerdie Troopers! Post op day 18 for me. This morning I had my first bowl of oat meal without putting it in the blender first since my surgeon advanced my diet yesterday. It slide down nicely. Rocky and I then went on a 30 minute brisk, 29 wind chill temp sunny fall walk. It felt good. Then when we return. I attempted a small crustless toast chicken salad topped with melted swiss cheese. I chewed each bite slowly 25 time before swallowing to make sure it pass thur my TIF gently without getting stuck. It worked with no problems. So now, I think I will be able to eat normal soft foods chewing each bite 25 times without problems. This will be my first day without taking Prilosec or Zantac. I will see how I do. I can always use liquid anti acids or take fast acting Zantac if I run into acid reflux while backing up on my diet. I continue to love reading other peoples recovery journals learning new things. I have been so much more relaxed to accepting all the challenges following a GERD repair surgery for the first time by being a member on this forum. Words cannot express my appreciation how I feel being on this forum with all your help and moral support. THANK YOU yeah
Have a wonderful Day turn

Good after noon GERDIE TROOPERS!! A lazy sleep in do nothing morning for me which is alright. My Hubby took Rocky on a hunters field trip so I am without him today. I borrowed one of my neighbors dogs to walk with me this late morning. Dreamer, a saluki small 7 year old was my partner. She does good with me on leash as I do walk her when my neighbor good friend goes away. My first 24 hour with no PPI or other antiacid medications went good. I tried to eat a soft bread sandwich (not the crust) wth my chicken spread topped with swiss cheese. Chewed properly before swallowing and everything went down fine, I am using my trusty Blender to chop solid meat into shreads, mix it with Mayo. I cut up a few pickles to stick in the blender with the meat to provide extra flavor. Today I went to the supermarket and picked up a small package of pre cut up stew meat cut up in 2cm cubes, not big chunks.
Also picked up a package of organic grown carrots. Now I have a nice beef stew ,Potatoes, carrots and beef brewing in my slow cooker which will be great for tomorrow. I will make sure I will chew each bite of stew 25 times before swallowing. I always have a saucer of applesauce along with saucer of yogurt so I can use those two to further aid the stew meat to slide down. If you are eating something that you think is too chunky on your plate you can always mix a clump of applesauce on top of food to soften it up before you take a bit. Apple sauce mixed with anything else does not taste that bad. In most cases I found it improves the taste. Well now to go and pick up out my costume to so I can dress up tomorrow to pass out treats to our trick or treaters, I just love passing out treat to the kids. It is such fun. Have a great Saturday. Our Green Bay Packers play at home tomorrow at noon. I hope they can win another game. Have fun with your Trick or Treaters and enjoy their costumes.

Good evening Gerdie Troopers!!! Post op day 20 for me. I started the day with a big sunday breakfast of 2 fried soft eggs, 2 sausages toast and OJ. All went down nicely as I cut it up fine with a knife. Mixed the sausage with apple sauce so it would slide down ok after chewing. No heart burn after 48 hours off of PPI and Zantac. Burping is a lot less now after I eat something. I went to church ,came back home to watch our Packers win their 3rd straight game in a row back at home in Green Bay. A friend called and I am going to to attempt to go out and eat at a chinese restaurant tomorrow evening. I will be so careful. Then we go to CPR class where I will tell the instructor I can do everything else except the compressions. This afternoon I had enough candy to pass out to over 400 trick or treaters. I was passing candy out for 2 hours and ran out as I had over 400 trick or treaters. I was fun while my candy lasted. Oh well it got me out in front of my house to do something while seeing lots of neat costumes turn Now I am going to sit back after I just enjoyed my Beef Stew supper that I started to make yesterday. Stews are always better the second day. Hope all have a great evening with no reflux.

Post op day 21 for me. Slept in as I stayed up latter working on my Knitted chocolate Lab. First I want to offer survival prayers streaming your way on the East Coast of the USA as Tropical Storm Sandy crosses over during the next 24 hours. I hope you do not suffer too much damage to your homes. Even inland as far as Pittsburgh ,PA will be experiencing 60 mile an hour winds with heavy rain tonight. I heard on a weather report 2 days ago that the Appalachian mountains could end up with over 50 inches of snow from Tropical Storm Sandy.
I am still doing good. I know I am still in the early healing stages and to continue to expect up and down days. I do feel a little sore in surgical site area today as I challenged different foods. example:Sausage some halloween candy bars with nuts.
Have a good Day.

post op day 22. Good evening Gerdie Troopers. I wised up yesterday by deciding not to go to the Chinese Restaurant before my CPR class. Why should I challenge my 3 week old TIF to new spicy high salt food I am not used to just only being on ground foods for a few days? Smart decision. I was able to make it thur the whole CPR, just simulating the compressions on the dummies without actually preforming them. My surgeon said I could swallow small pills. So I have been putting my small pills in apple sauce whole with out crushing them. I still have the fear one pill will get stuck. I know with time, I will get over that. I did try last night a small bowl of my Husbands yummie chili. He made it last night so the house smelled yummie and I could not resist. I did feel the surgical site a little irritated. So today I backed off to more bland foods and feel better now. My job has accepted me back on light duty. So this thursday it will be nice to get back to work. I know it will be difficult at first , but I will just take things slow doing one thing at a time, not expecting too much of myself. I only work 3 days a week so I have 4 off in a 7 day period. I won't do much before I go to work so I can save my energy. My work place misses me terribly. I should do fine. Well that is all the news.
Have a great evening . I am still praying for all those who are effected negatively by Super Storm on the east coast.
Anne :-)

Hi Anne,
I'm glad you are doing so well! Can I ask what your symptoms were before surgery?
Thanks
Take care always!
