about three months ago I had three severe episodes of painful reflux. Since then I have had no appetite whatsoever, I belch constantly, I get very nauseous and I can't eat much. I have lost 30 pounds and have withdrawn from all activities in my life. I also am constantly clearing my throat and sniffing back large amounts of phlegm, although this has been happening and worsening for three or four years. I also took 80 mgs of omeprazole a day for 11 weeks with no improvement. I had an endoscopy which revealed a very small hiatal hernia and esophagitis. My doctor doesn't seem to think this is a huge problem or that it's causing my symptoms. I feel like my only hope is the nissen surgery. Would anyone perform this on someone who DOESN'T have regular heartburn and acid reflux? Doesn't the esophagitis mean that I am suffering from GERD?

When I was at the phase you are, my Doctor told me to Raise the head of my bed on 6 inch blocks. Eat smaller meals. Not to eat 4 hours before I went to bed. She told me to take Prilosec OTC 20mg in the morning and Zantac 300 mg before I went to bed. I added Aloe Vera Juice 2 OZ twice a day on my own which has helped me the best. I could not eat much either until I added the Aloe Vera Juice. It tastes terrible , but I have since got used to it. my endo scope diagnosed me with Hiatal hernia chronic esophagitus. So my surgeon did TIF= Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication with Hiatal hernia repair. I am Post op day 8and just beginning to feel better. My hiatal hernia created a big Bulge preventing my valve from closing allowing acid to leak in my esophagus. Google check the TIF operation to see if it is right for you. Make some of the GERD life style changes to see it will help. Best Wishes turn

Thanks a lot, Potatoe! I will try to learn a little more about that. Did you have regular heartburn? What confuses me is how nausea and appetite are crippling me but I don't have the heartburn that is normally associated with GERD.

I wonder if it could be associated with your sinus nose ear equilibrium making you feel nauseated rather than GI trouble? Yes I had continue burning in my esophagus. If I stopped taking prilosec OTC, it would worsen. It did not get better. I did not have nausea. Meniere's disease, chronic disease of the inner ear characterized by episodes of vertigo can also cause nausea and vomiting. Good luck ! it is always a worry when you do not know where you symptoms are streaming from.

SweetPotatoe, did your surgeon do the hybrid approach, meaning did he laparoscopically repair the hernia and then do the TIF through your mouth? I am holding out for the Linx, but since it is still new, I am also looking into the hybrid TIF. Thank you for any feedback you can provide.
