Does any one know if there is any active work going on regarding evaluating MRI suitability of LINX.

Is it in theory possible that LINX might be safe for MRIs ?

I do expect that MRIs might be useful for me sometime in the future. So, even if I get a LINX, I want to know if I can expect LINX to be deemed MRI safe at some point in the future ?

I wrote to Torax US and much like the Presidential debates, they wouldn't answer the question beyond the "No MRI with LINX for now" reply.

That's all I've ever seen/read/ and have been told. Just flat out NO with LINX and MRIs :/

When pressed they told me that they cannot divulge future info because of fda regulations. I had half a mind to write to the UK one but did not bother. An old thread here indicates that MRI was studied in pigs and it was safe. I think Dr. Ashton mentioned it is likely to be safe and approved for use in the future.

When I go on the 13th I can ask the surgeon and see if he knows. He seems to be a straight shooter kind of guy. As last as I'm not too drugged up to remember ;) LOL I'll remind my husband to ask too!

With LINX, status quo is that you can't get MRIs. So, I decided to check the risk of cancer from CTs/X-rays etc which are the current alternatives to MRIs.

Here is a cancer risk calculator from exposure to radiation (X-rays, CTs etc). www.xrayrisk.com/calculator/calculator-recurring-studies.php?id=24

I think having 20 CT scans puts your risk of cancer at 2% !!! Quite significant if you have a chronic problem and expect to have imaging done often.

NDL, will wait to hear what your surgeon says.

I meanwhile wrote to the UK site and got a slightly more helpful response.

(1) Is it safe to have MRIs with LINX currently ? No

(2) If not, are there any studies that indicate that it is definitely NOT safe ? No studies have been completed but it is contraindicated by the manufacturer at present.

(3) If not, are there any studies currently in progress or being planned to evaluate safety within a MRI environment ? No. It is possible that the guidance on this will change in the future and there is talk of MRI at a lower Tessler being permitted but at this stage it is not the case and you should not proceed on the basis you expect the MRI criteria to change.

This seems to be a slight change from 6/7/11

www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=45&m=2126795 when Beargirl wrote

Well I heard back from Dr Ashton re MRIs & LINX. Torax (makers of LINX) are apparently saying that it's still in the testing phase but they are 99.9% sure it will be given the O.K. in months to come!!

I wonder why that is. May be they ran into issues with full fledged MRIs.. I don't know, or they were trying to assuage Beargirl.

Very disappointing that there seems to be a rule out of regular MRIs overall.

Me: It sounds like full strength MRIs are a definite NO. That is disappointing.
Torax: Yes, they are a definite No. It’s a great procedure though and those who are eligible have considered the benefits outweigh the disadvantage. It’s something that all LINX eligible patients have to weigh up.

MRI seems allowed upto 0.7T. Nerves require 1.5T typically from my understanding. 3T are the latest machines but Linx wont be able to handle them.
