I am not a doctor or in any kind of career like that. I am a married mom of two who works at the local walmart part time.

I do however take 20 mg of zegerid a day usually around lunch time. I also have had heaviness in my chest on the days that I over eat as far as breads, chocolate and such. The days that I eat more veggies and fruits the heaviness is not there (that I can remember).  I have noticed though the last few months of taking the zegerid that trying to take a deep breath is a problem unless i release the first breath and then try again....then I can take the deeper breath. I chalked the breath thing up to being overweight....I am 5'2 at 220 pounds so I thought it was that  but after reading on different sites about the side effects of the zegerid I am now wondering!

I have been taking the zegerid of 20 mg for over 5+ years........I use to take the nexium up until 10 years ago when I became pregnant with my son. Apparently they didn't know what side effects the nexium would have on the baby. Soon after that I started taking the zegerid and have done so ever since. It works great for me as long as I stay away from spicy things, spaghetti sauce alot and cut down on the soda.

I can honestly say that I have not tried the prilosec or any of the others except the zantac but that just didn't seem to do anything. I hate the feeling of the heaviness in my chest because I'm so afraid of a heart attack or something happening....I guess I will have to bring this up aty my next doctors appointment.

I hope you all get the meds you need, it is nice to meet you all and I am hoping this site will be what I need. Have a great nite and god bless. :-)

Hi Heather,
Welcome to Healing Well!  As I read your post, one thing came to mind.  You said you take your Zegerid around lunchtime.  Are you careful to take it on an empty stomach and an hour before eating?  If you want it to do the job, that's very important.  Here is a link to a document that discusses how to get the most out of your PPIs.

The breathing issue could be caused by GERD/reflux, as it can create some lung issues.  See if changing your dosing routine makes a difference.  It'll take several weeks to see an effect, as your lungs will need to heal if that's the cause.  Also, you could elevate the head of your bed (putting bed raisers and/or blocks enough to raise it 7-8".  It helps keep acid in your stomach because it allows gravity to help.  Just a thought!

Glad you've joined us!

Very best wishes,

Denise

Hi Heather,
Did you read the document I linked to?  It's important to take PPIs before a meal, and when you eat that meal it should be high in protein (it can even be milk, yogurt, cheese), because that makes it work correctly.  Taking a PPI before bed does nothing.  The thing to take before bed would be Zantac.  That doesn't need food to work.

I'm really glad you've joined the forum.  There's lots of support here and many who understand your struggles.  I don't know if you noticed, but there's a diabetes forum here, too.  Here's the link:  http://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=20

Hopefully things will soon get better for you!

Hang in there!

I have been taking Zegerid for about 2 years now and it has changed my life as far as my GERD is concerned. I have tried others but they often cause anxiety issues for me where Zegerid does not. I don't think it is the Zegerid that is causing the shortness of breath though and it is most likely coming from you GERD. I will tell you though that my husband had issues with being able to catch a full breath and he was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. He often thought he was having a heart attack at times too. Make sure to take your Zegerid on an empty stomach though, at least an hour before eating. Best of Luck!
