Good Morning:

Still miserable with the upper abdominal pain after 3 weeks on Dexilant for Silet Gerd, esophageal erosion and "pre" barret's per GI.  Has anyone had any similar side effects from any of their PPI's.  Scoped 8 weeks ago, first prescribed 20 mg prilosec 2x day, DID NOTHING.  zEGERID did nothing.  Switched to Dexilant 3 weeks ago.  First 10 days ab pain, gone, since that time horrible acid reflux, gurggling, burning in throat, heaviness is chest, cramping in low back down legs.  I don't think this med is right for me.  Doc keeps telling me to stay on Dexilant 60mg 1x day and add mylanta throughout the day.  Told me I need an antidepressant for anxiety!  Hhmm, wonder why I'm frustrated.  Is this acid burning more damage into my esophageaus.  I think I know the answer.  Following Reflux diet to the tee.  Help!  I'm so miserable.  I want to stop Dexilant and find another GI.  Can I just stop the medicaiton?  My ab pain is constant now instead of intermittent 8 weeks ago.

Thank you for reading this post.

Hi lady1741,
Sorry to hear you're having so much trouble.  I've never taken Dexilant, but several people on the forum recently have had problems with it.  Another member, NoDoubtLove, wrote about it in one of her posts:
"When I tried the Dexilant, just 1 day, I had BAD side effects. I felt like I was slowly dying or something :( I never want to take that again.) When I told the nurse she said people either respond amazing to it or really really bad."
You've taken it for 3 weeks and are having a lot of trouble.  I think it's time you insist that your doctor try you on another PPI.  What you're experiencing isn't typical.  By 3 weeks you should know if it's going to help you or not.

Of course you can always get a referral to another GI, but it will take you a long time to get in to be seen.  It would be quicker to work through your present GI doc, then start researching another one and make an appointment, if you're not satisfied.

Good luck!
Take care,
Denise

Thank you, Denise!

I was right!  Dexilant (and sadly all the other PPI"s) was doing more harm than good for me.  I got into my new GI yesterday and he did say that there are a group of individuals who cannot take the ppi's since they increase more acid in their systems and make them worse (Woo Hoo Lucky Me, right?  I'm one of them).  Thanks for your suggestions.  I kind of thought that after 3 weeks of a PPI especially the Dexilant, that I shouldnt have been getting sicker, and yes, I was going nutty, too.  Horrible headaches (never ever did I get headaches), felt like I was crawling out of my skin, sobbing all the time, not able to even make up a bed or pick up clothing off the floor (not like me since I'm pretty OCD about how clean and orderly my house is :o)!  That's probably part of the gerd issues too.

Im off the ppi's and I see him in a week.  Just on the Carafate (helps a bit with coating the inflamed esophagus) and zantac 150 2 x day.  I also am gluten free and acid free, two.  But Now I feel like I'm belching all the time.  I'm so tired of this all.  I'll keep trying to keep the faith, include the natural alternatives, stay gluten free (I have the celiac gene, but first GI didn't even biopsy me for that and she knew I had the gene.  Oy!!!!  Does this ever get better.  Is there a reason they just can't do some type of surgery on me to get rid of the reflux?

Thanks for all your wonderful support here on this forum.  I hope you are well and stay well.  You sound like your a Vet.  We thank you for your support!  :o)
