I have an endoscopy and colonoscopy booked for some time in the next few weeks. My Dr told me he thought my stomach problems, an uncomfortable gnawing feeling at the very top of my stomach was dyspepsia. I saw this same Dr with the same symptoms 4 years ago and he said the same thing. He knows I am an anxious wreck and has ordered the tests t ease my mind. He stated the chance of this being stomach or oesophagus cancer was remote in the extreme. He prescribed my Nexium which I have been taking for the past three days.

I always wake up feeling great then my anxiety flares and the cycle begins. Is that feeling cancer? What if my Dr is wrong? I'm taking the meds, but still some days are better/worse than others. Am I still being overly anxious or should I be worried. I am a 39yr male, healthy (other than this).

I can't seem to stop worrying about it and am always pushing my stomach, thinking about it and worrying. I can eat normally etc, rarely suffer from heartburn but generally have a uneasy jelly-like feeling in my nervous stomach. Sometimes I have a very slight lump in my chest but this comes and goes and I'm not sure whether I am imagining it or if it related to my anxiety.

Does anyone here think I have cancer, I just don't know where to turn. I wish my endoscopy was now so I could find out one way or the other.

Please help!

Jamie

Hi Jamie,
First of all, please try not to think worst case scenario. Second, you need to try and find ways to relax (deep breathing, reading, whatever helps) because anxiety causes your stomach to produce more stomach acid. The digestive system is very much connected to our emotions. Give the medication time to work, and in the mean time, watch your diet and see if that helps. Stay away from acidic foods like tomatoes, peppers, organges etc as well as chocolate, coffee, caffine, soda, smoking, high fat and fried foods and processed foods. Do not eat before bed, eat at a time where you will have 3 hours to digest your food. You may also consider going gluten free. I am willing to bet that you do not have cancer. We all fear this but cancer appears to be a very low risk. You can also try gaviscon (it is an OTC) to see if that helps you as well. Good luck, and check out the threads on this forum to help ease your anxiety.

Hi Jamie,
The risk of cancer is very low, so don't worry about that.  I had GERD symtoms for 20 years with breakthrough reflux and horrible reflux-caused asthma, and my esophagus is healthy.  I'd get esophigitis from reflux several times a year and lose 20 pounds each time because of not being able to eat.

Stop worrying.  Please...if you haven't visited the Anxiety and Panic Disorder forum @ http://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=9 .  You need help dealing with your anxiety over this, and there are lots of people there who can offer help and support.

Take a breath.  Relax.  Visit the anxiety forum...
You can do this!
Take care,
