After being on a liquid diet for 10 days, I tried to eat real food yesterday. Filled up after just a few bites, woke up with the familiar hole in the gut pain I had before the surgery.. The pain was pretty much gone until I ate food. Anyone know of a good diet that is easy on the gut & provides adequate nutrition? Or maybe I should stay on the liquid diet for a longer period of time? Just got another case of ensure so at least I have that to fall back on. Hoping I'm not destined to fear food again because it hurts to eat.
Thank you to all

Hi Hiatal surgery newbie,
Welcome to us Fellow Gerdie Troopers. yeah Yes it is very normal to experience pain when introducing advance diet to new surgical areas. Your surgery area is not yet fully healed. It does take some time to heal. Try more soft bland food for example , vanilla pudding , Sweet potatoes( just the orange part not the skins), Spinach , bananas. applesauce, oatmeal for example. Stay away from spicy hard cracker type foods for now. The meat I started with when I advanced my diet was chicken grounded with some gravy. You can read my Sweet Potatoe first time Tif hiatal thread as I kept a daily food diary to foods I advanced on what post op day and how I reacted to them.
Hope this helps and good luck for happy healing.
Anne :-)

Sweet potato, where can I find your diet diary? I looked around this site but couldn't find it.
Thanks so much!

HSN-

Check out the GERD resources sticky thread at the very top of the thread list. There is several good resources there about diet and things to expect.

Anything you eat be sure to chew it to death. Chew everything to a liquid. If it won't do that spit it out, not worth any extra pain. Stay away from solid meats like steak, but fine ground meat usually works well. Soft bread is trouble, but toast and crackers work because they can be chewed to a liquid.

As for amounts. Any time you up you diet expect to eat less than you did at the previous level until things heal more. It is normal to get full after a couple bites or so early on. Eat frequent meals to help get more calories. I ate 6 to 8 times a day.

Take care,
Bill
