MY surgery is Tuesday. I have a large hiatal hernia which will probably need mesh repair and NF. My surgeon was vague about returning to work. Just said some people come back in 1-2 weeks. While he was saying that, his nurse was shaking her head no at me. Everything I read says 2 weeks to go back to work. I told my employer 4 weeks, but now I am wondering if I should plan on returning sooner. I have a busy desk job with a fair amount of walking, spend a lot of time on a stool working at a counter. Any thoughts?

I'd wait 3 weeks and if you can come back then call the boss, but I wish I had waited 4 weeks. I was back in 2 weeks but I sat for most of the time.

I was initially scheduled to be out 3 weeks. I ended up taking 6. The 4 weeks you have scheduled sounds about right. You can always cut it short if you are feeling great.

I am on day 13 post Nissen fundoplication. I also had a huge hiatal hernia (over half of my stomach was in my chest cavity). I am scheduled to go back to work tomorrow. My surgeon released me with NO restrictions. I'm really worried if I'll be able to work because I am a health inspector that does inspections in trenches and other field work that can be strenuous. I'm planning to take this week day by day, hour by hour. May need to switch to half days to begin with.
Many folks I've chatted with in this forum say that if you can take 4 weeks you'll be in great shape going back. I'd make sure your surgeon knows exactly what you do for a living before committing to going back to work too soon.
Wishing you good luck with your surgery.

I am/was a mechanic. I was working at an Oscar Myer plant as an area mechanic and needed 6 weeks with my 1st one. Be very careful how much weight you lift during the first 6 to 8 weeks. I was restricted to 5lbs on all 3.

With my 2nd one I was out for 8 weeks, well I tried to go back at 6 weeks and couldn't handle the heavy lifting. With my 3rd I was unemployed and so it didn't matter.

Take care,
