Jenna-

Yep, had my last redo as an open surgery. I actually preferred it to my 2 lap nissens. No shoulder pain and seemed to be able to advance my diet a bit easier. They gave me an elastic band to help hold my stomach muscles during recovery and it helped a lot getting up and down. If I need another redo I am going to ask for an open surgery.

My incision is from the bottom of my sternum to about 2 inches above my belly button. My pain wasn't any worse than my lap surgeries once I went home. I did have to stay in the hospital for a week though.

Take care,
Bill

Oh most definitely. I had a PCA pump and used it when I could. Since I am also a chronic pain patient I had to use dilaudid vs. morphine and mine was set for every 8 minutes. The only draw back to a PCA is when you fall asleep you can get behind on the pain meds and it takes a while to get back on top of the pain. I had a very good surgeon who had standing orders to allow the nurses to give me a boost in my IV if this happened.
I also had a PICC line vs. a normal IV and that made it much easier for the after surgery blood tests since they didn't have to stick me every time. If you are going to be staying more than a couple days I would ask for the PICC line.

Take care,
Bill
