Hi all,
Just had an endoscopy this am--everything went well, felt OK after procedure, but noticed some shooting chest and back pains when eating the crackers. I told the nurse and doctor and they said things can be sensitive for a day or two .

Anytime I swallow a drink or food I am still getting weird "cramps/shooting pains" in my back--sort of on the left side. Has anyone else experience this?

I have a lot of experience with this. Yes things can be tender in there, especially if they took biopsies. It can be like small ulcers if there is enough acid present and eating can irritate it too.
I usually have a malt after my EGDs to help calm things down in there and then gradually start eating again.

If the pains increases in area during the next day let you GI know. When I had an esophageal tear it started out normal, but every 1/2 hour or so I would get bad heartburn that was expanding every 1/2hr until it was my whole chest that was in pain and I had a hard time taking a breath without severe pain.
If it is just localized then I would say it is just irritated.

Take care,

Bill, I'm so sorry--the egd caused the tear or was it something else? How long after the egd did you get the severe pain? I'm sure that was traumatizing.

My spasming pain is mostly in the back ribcage area--gets aggravated during a silent hiccup or burp, but fades fairly quickly.

I had an endoscopy a week ago today and today is the first day that I've felt reasonably comfortable. My endoscopy came back 'all normal' and I don't even know yet if they took any biopsies but I've felt really rough all week. I have faith it will settle with the natural remedies I'm using - I can't tolerate PPI's as they cause extreme anxiety and grass-green BM's.
My remedies are drinking honey in hot water and taking slippery elm; if I get symptoms I'll use Gaviscon of windsetlers - worth a try.

Thanks guys--I tried to eat breakfast this morning--PAINFUL!! drinking just liquids was OK. I don't seem to be having expanding chest pain like Bill, and it's not painful at all when I don't eat (the intermittent cramps went away) , so I think I'll see how it goes. If it's not improving, will definitely call the doctor back--but wow--this does not feel good at all and I've just dropped about 6 pounds in the last month or so because my stomach has been such a wreck--I'd don't want to be dropping any more weight
