I have been going through this gerd stuff for a couple of years off and on.  For the past several months, I have been on Nexium, then Aciphex and now Protonix....and I am not getting relief.  I went to a specialist who told me my chest and back pain could not be from gerd.  My gp thought that was strange but did the ekg per the specialist request....all was normal.  They did a barium swallow test and again...normal.  My question....this all started when my husband and I went through some extremely stressful stuff.  Does anyone know if this can be stress related?  I wonder if I really need all these meds or if the meds are causing this stuff to not go away?  I know it coincides with the major stress.  Doctors are so quick to throw the pills at you. Right now I am on 40 mg Protonix two times a day.  I have been on that 2 weeks and still in daily pain although the throwing up into the back of my throat and out my nose is gone!!  Hope someone can shed some light as I need help.  Am considering buying the Cure Your Heartburn book over the net for thirty bucks as I am quite desperate.  Before this stress  in my life, I had an iron stomach....could eat ANYTHING.

You have my sympathy,  not that it's going to help you,  your entering a very confusing topic with many diferent opinions,  not only from the people suffering from it but also from the doctor's dealing with it,  I have seen many doctor's and listend to much contradiction between them,  as I see it we're in the hand's of the god's on this one,  what might work on one person will do nothing on another,  nothing makes a lot of sence with it,  I like you have been on the normal pill's dished out by the doctor's and hospital,  nothing has made any change to the pain,  my latest bi opsie results surgest some reduction but then he said in the same breath he cant rule out Barret's,  for me it dosen't matter what I eat,  I have tried bland food and spring water and still the same pain,  the only thing that help's is a mild curry !  as for stress,  yes it can be a factor,  you could go on antidepressant's but it's getting off them after ? sorry I can't give you any concreat advice but your in a grey area here,  I have a friend that has been suffering this for 7 year's  he's even had surgery and but still the same,  my advice for what it's worth is read as much as you can about it and try what work's for some people,  mabe it will work for you ?  I wish you good luck,  remember your not alone here ! best regard's   Bedwedge.

Hi hearty and welcome,

While stress causes a lot of ailments, doctors have not proven stress to be a cause of GERD.  Your behavior while under stress may cause heartburn and reflux (smoking, alcohol consumption, sleeping habits, eating habits/certain foods (ie. I love chocolate when I'm stressed but is bad, bad for my GERD)).  I know it is stressful but you may have to go down the list of PPIs to find one that works for you.  They all have a different formula and even though they are made to treat the same thing doesn't mean they all work the same on everyone.  I am on Prevacid now but only after trial and error.  Don't give up and try to keep yourself healthy... and keep us posted! tongue

How long do you have to stay on a certain med before the doc says it is time to try a new one? The nurse told me a month!!!!! Long time in pain.

As far i am concerned my acidity increases immediately under stress, panic, anxiety, fear, supression of anger and many other mental symptoms. I believe GERD has direct linkage with state of mind & Senstive natured persons are more prone to acidity attacks. and slowly their digestion system becomes week to with stand cirtain types of food which may not creat any problem to other healthy people.
