So I have a burning sensation in my esophagus pretty much all the time. I tried to take digestive enzymes and they made my reflux about ten times worse. Does that mean that I have too much acid production in my stomach.

Why do some people tell me that is complete crap? I dont think my stomach is producing too little stomach acid if digestive enzymes make it worse

Hi Maria,
Yes, you could have too much acid.  There are conditions and situations that lead the stomach to produce too much acid.  Have you been to see your PCP or a GI doc yet?
Obviously if the enzymes cause you stomach irritation and increased acid, don't take them!  Another possibility is that your stomach is producing just enough acid, but your LES isn't keeping it in your stomach where it belongs.  Listen to your body.

In my case, stomach irritation from antibiotics or various and sundry irritants, can cause an increase in acid production.  Are you on any acid-blocking meds or OTC products like Maalox?

It sounds like it's time to see a doctor if you haven't already.  Hang in there!
Good luck!

hi dencha,
Yes i was having troubles about four months ago and i went to the doc two months in and she found h pylori and gave me a triple therapy of strong antibiotics. Although there is a significant decrease in the amount of acid and pain and discomfort i felt in the beginning, i still have reflux all the time. Do you think this is from the antibiotics?

My doc has me schedlued for a ph test at the end of the month. Do you think thats too far from now? Should i try to get a sooner appointment. Im always worried im hurting myself and cant do anything to stop it.
I also had an endo done and they found nothing but slight irritation on stomach lining and a littlw bit of esophagitis (that was four months ago when i was at my worst and it had barely started)
Ive never had acid reflux before, it all randomly started when i swallowed a multivitamin. It hasnt stopped since.

Hi Maria,
My guess is that the antibiotics have done a number on your stomach.  Some of us are more sensitive, I guess, and can't handle that type of thing.  I try to stay away from antibiotics as much as possible.  Before I had my Nissen it would start gastritis then move into my esophagus.  I'd be unable to eat anything but smooth foods and very little of those for two or three months until it healed.

I wonder if your doc would try putting you on PPIs twice a day instead of once.  Be sure to let your GI doc know how much you're suffering.  There's another thing that might make you more comfortable--Carafate suspension.  It coats the stomach and esophagus and helps it heal.  I find it a godsend.

Here's a link to information on how to take PPIs correctly, and therefore get the most out of them:

Good luck!
Take care,
