Just wondering about others experience having gerd, and getting used to it. How do you explain it to others? How did you get used to changing your diet?

I went on a date the other night and felt so embarrassed because all I had was applesauce and mashed potatoes. I explained I have a "sensitive stomach" because I didn't want to get into all the details. I hate that I have this and am afraid of trying new foods in case they're spicy or would hurt my stomach without my knowledge. I wish I could just eat anything without worrying if it is spicy or fried or has chocolate in it!

Honestly, I don't even bother to explain because only us refluxers can truly understand what it's like.

You may be able to explain it in terms of being similar to food allergies, people seem to understand that more. Or you can just explain that there is a structural issue (most of us it is ) and there are things you have to do to manage the symptoms. Anyone you date should be understanding of this in this day in age. You are right, it is annoying, unfortunate and frustrating. It can get depressing and tiresome explaining but you have to do what you need to do to manage the symptoms.
