Hello,
I had a pain I'd never felt before this morning -- it was a stabbing pain, several times, at the wrap site while I was driving into work this morning.  This was after I had drunken two glasses of milk with protein, and a large bowl of cereal (mostly consisting of two bananas).

I'm not sure if what I'm feeling now is the old reflux or if it is irritation caused from eating too big of a meal.

I had been pushing the weights a bit hard, but nothing major (nothing more than 35 lbs per dumbbell).  That was yesterday that I lifted weights.

I'm actually quite worried right now, so if someone could give me a little reassurance I'd be most grateful.

I do have mild gastritis, but I wouldn't think that would account for stabbing pains.

I don't feel nauseous or anything. And I feel better now, but it was like several stabbing pains, one after another. My stomach feels full (from the food, I'm sure), but I also feel reflux (or maybe it's irritation)?

Someone please give me some reassurance. I'm really worried here. I know that some people said that when their wrap ruptured they felt a stabbing pain.

I had an endoscopy recently, and a barium swallow not too long ago.  Both showed I was totally normal.  But I'm worried that possibly this was from yesterday, from when I was lifting weights?  I feel like I overdid it once, with one lift, like I overexerted my stomach when I lifted once.  I don't even do sit-ups anymore since the surgery because I don't want to hurt it.  What could it be??

I feel better now, but I'm still a bit freaked out. Has anyone experienced stabbing pains at the surgery site?

Not sure if I'm experiencing renewed reflux or not, or if it's just mild irritation.

What exactly does a busted wrap feel like? My gastroenterologist had told me that I would *DEFINITELY* know if my wrap had come undone.

I'm wondering if perhaps I am so tough that I just experienced mild stabbing pain as the symptom of the wrap coming undone?

Or is that ridiculous? Please tell me that is ridiculous.

Dave-

I just went through this a few weeks ago. I had about half an apple get stuck and when I finally got it to go through it felt like a hot knife. My surgeon ordered a barium swallow and it showed all was intact, but a bit swollen. He had me take pepsid for a month and all is well again.

I think you are experiencing the same thing. Even after it is fully healed we can still over work it and make it angry. I felt like I was at about the 3 or 4 week in recovery when it happened. That lasted about a week or so. He wanted me to take the pepsid just to make things easier for the wrap to heal since it can leak when it's swollen.

I'm bettin all is still good, just irritated my friend.

Take care,
Bill

Plus I'm eating now (my daily lunchtime chicken noodle soup), and everything is going down quite well, nothing different than usual. Is this a good sign that the wrap is still intact?

I thought I felt something pull once when I was lifting, but it felt more like my stomach muscles. Not sure what a busted wrap feels like..... (I hope to never find out!!)

Hi Dave,

Relax!  You're fine!  If you blew out your wrap with lifting you would have known it immediately, and it wouldn't just be intermittent stabbing pain.  If you've got gastritis, it's probably related to that.  Remember...your wrap is created out of your stomach, so when your stomach is irritated, so is your wrap. I have a reactive stomach and can speak of this first-hand.

Take it a little easy eating for a while.  Don't forget to chew your food completely, and try not to challenge it too much.  Give it a little time and you'll be fine.

Best wishes,

Thanks, Denise, Andy, and Bill!!!

I feel better already!

I'm going to lift some weights tomorrow morning. No more than 35 lbs per dumbbell, and with smooth, controlled movements. No going crazy with it, though I have to push myself to not push myself.....

Actually I didn't lift anything this morning. Figured I'd take it easy for today and tomorrow, and watch what I eat.

My wrap is sore. Which is understandable considering I just started lifting weights again after a few weeks' break. Also I'd been way too liberal with my eating and coffee-drinking.

I think I'm starting to learn to not panic whenever I have a return of my symptoms. I scale things back a bit and try to not sweat it, keeping the faith that all is still good inside of me. It makes me a bit nervous but I'm learning to be tough when it comes to my internal organs and weird pains. It is an excellent exercise in patience and, quite honestly, faith in general. While I would love to never have any pains/symptoms whatsoever, I do have a certain appreciation for the whole thing.

Dave-

You have developed a much better attitude towards all of this. That is awesome. When I stressed my wrap with the apple my surgeon told me to take Pepsid for a month and that seemed to speed things up a bit. You can get it over the counter and it's not a regular PPI.
I like the plan you have in place. Remember to also control your breathing along with the controlled lifting and keep them abs tight. Denise makes a very good point about the wrap being made of the stomach. It can get irritated inside too and get angry. We just have to take a step back and let things calm down.
Just with our eating when things get irritated maybe you could back down with the weight a bit more, say to 30lbs and lift that for a few days then move back up slowly.

Take care,
Bill

I don't understand, but it actually feels worse now than it did yesterday, in terms of the reflux feeling.

I took a Zantac also...

Dave,
When you get into a full-blown gastritis (I'm having one now) it can get worse before it gets better.  Your wrap will get irritated and you'll even get some reflux, even when you generally don't.  Don't sweat it.  Thing will settle down in a few weeks and you'll be back to normal.  If you irritated your wrap either eating or lifting (or both!) it takes a decent amount of time to get things back to normal.  For me it's usually two weeks to a month!  Try the Pepcid.  It'll help things heal faster.

Most of all, don't worry.  It'll get back to normal things heal and settle back into place. There's probably some swelling and could even be some esophageal irritation.

You'll do fine!

Dave-

The pepcid really helped me. I agree with Denise too... don't worry, stress will make things worse. Think of it as going back to about week 3 or 4, relax and let things heal.

Pepcid helped me a LOT! It was just a few days and I feel much better. Back to lifting weights and exercising.

I think I had just eaten and drank WAAY too much that morning. I was full and then I immediately ate a giant bowl of raisin bran with two bananas, and that was after lifting weights where I pushed myself a bit too hard.
