Hey all,
I have really bad reflux that currently isn't really being controlled by PPIs which is leading me to think I will need surgery. Well, have any of you had bad indigestion and burping for hours (sometimes 8 hrs or even 10-12 hrs later, next day you burp and can taste food from dinner the night before)? I have this really bad sometimes when I eat greasy or fatty foods, particularly a lot of food in the meal. It's especially gross to taste a food in a burp from the night before! I'm scared I have gastroparesis. I don't feel really full though after I eat a little and don't vomit. This also only seems to happen when I eat these types of bad foods, as I should with GERD, but sometimes I cheat a little and pay the price. The other night I endulged in a couple ice cream bars late at night and then I was still burping them when I woke up like 10 hours later. Is this normal with reflux?

The doctor didn't seem to think I needed a gastric emptying test done, but I forgot to mention the burping to the doctor. Any thoughts?

I used to have it too and I remember that stopping PPIs for a while seemed to have made it go away.

I feel long term PPI usage does some strange things to people's stomachs and should be avoided if possible. Not to mention the risk of harmful bacteria taking residence in your gut because of no stomach acid to kill it.

I was surprised to learn that foods can take up to three days to digest completely. And yes, the digestive process is impaired by taking away the acid.

oh wow, I didn't know it could take that long! Yea I've been on PPIs for 13 years, so I don't know if that has something to do with it. It usually happens when I overdo it and eat bad stuff, usually a bigger meal at once. Then I can taste it in a burp for a long time, so gross.

Gerd Hater - I don't think I can ever stop the PPIs without getting surgery first. Just a day without them and I have the worst acid rebound ever! I'm going to get the PH impendence and manometry done soon here and hopefully figure out what's going on because I'm having a non-stop burning sensation in my lower throat even on a double dose of PPIs! I hate it, so miserable:(

Hey shrtcak81, that sounds really uncomfortable! It appears to me that you haven't really gotten any clear answers here, so I hope that you can get some answers from your doctor. Best of luck, Ben

I hope I get answers soon! Anyone else get this sometimes? I feel like it can be either slow digestion because of taking PPIs or gastroparesis. It's normally when I've eaten fatty foods. I don't know, maybe it's normal for someone with reflux. Anyone?

I think 13 years is long for PPIs. I wouldn't go down the route of checking for gastroparesis yet, instead I'd concentrate on getting surgery and off of PPIs. Hopefully, that's all that might be needed.
