I have reflux after pretty much everything I eat. It burns when I swallow near bottom of throat and I have this warm burning sensation in my throat all day long! It feels like it's on fire. I'm soon going to get the manometry and PH impendence tests done so I can figure out if it's still acid after being on a double dose of PPIs, zantac, and tums/gaviscon or non-reflux. I believe I need surgery for this to ever be corrected:( So frustrated!!

Hey shrtcak81,

I have a burning sensation up near the Adams Apple (laryngeal prominence) almost every day on a strong PPI.
My esophageal manometry (off PPI) revealed that my LES pressure was weak, but the UES is strong.

What interests me is that if acid based reflux gets past the LES how is it making it past the UES or is it, since the UES is in the same vicinity as the Adams Apple?

See...

It is very important to have the esophageal manometry and 24/hr Ph/Impedence tests off PPI in order to diagnose.
Addtionally, an Upper Endoscopy (EGD) should accompany these tests, in my opinion.

Thanks for your reply Gastricman! It sounds like we are suffering from similar symptoms. Yea, I'm on a double dose of PPIs too and still have this stupid burning in the throat. It's ridiculous! I'm getting those tests done soon. Does that mean that I have LPR if it's in the throat? To be honest, I've always had acid reflux in the throat and never had chest pain before and for 8 years it was controlled by PPIs, so I'm thinking that my condition got worse and maybe I have a weak LES and I think I became tolerant to the PPIs. This is just my theory but I guess we'll see that the tests reveal. I'm hoping I'm a good candidate for surgery because I can't feel like this anymore. I can't even function anymore without being bothered by this burning. Do you have burning in the stomach too? I had an endoscopy done last year and it didn't reveal really any damage, just mild gastritis and showed I had reflux. Also, do you have acid reflux or non-acid reflux? Are you planning on getting surgery?

Hi Crystal,

Yes, planning on getting surgery at some point in the near future.

Your MD will be able to tell from the tests exactly what is going on. The Upper Endoscopy is important, especially when they take teeny biopsies of tissue and test for h.plylori, celiac sprue and any dysplasia in the GE junction (LES).

You should also have a HiRes Motility Study to determine pressures of the UES and LES and esophageal movement (peristalsis) off PPI meds - this is very important. Same for the 24 Hr Ph/Impendence testing.

No, I don't have burning in my stomach while on PPI, but a scratchy throat at times which (in my opinion) is being caused by reflux very or on the UES, feeling that something is in my thoat (globus.)

Hope this helps!

After going though 24 hr ph/Impedence and motility testing it was proved that I do indeed have acid reflux.
