just after I made a deal with God that if my LPR cough resolved I would take excellent care of myself, it disappeared and I have been eating WORSE than ever. I think I was feeling deprived and just lost it. The first, second, and third day I had no symptoms. I honestly thought I was well even though intellectually I knew there is no well from this without surgery.

Fast forward two weeks and now I have more typical GERD symptoms. The first thing I felt was a cold feeling in my abdomen but now it's clearly burning.

The only good news in this is I do get relief from the UK Gaviscon. The bad news is I'm so horribly upset with myself. I've been depressed for other reasons and I just wasn't uncomfortable enough to give up everything I love!!

Also, I have had an upper respiratory virus for two weeks now so there was a lot of napping and laying down too soon after eating.

I'm just venting really, hoping someone can relate to this and offer support to get my act together.

Thegspeak, welcome to the forum.

I hope you don't still think you have to give up all foods you love or that there is no "well" without surgery. There are all sorts of things to try, so don't give up!

I had loads of trouble after eating, but figured out that certain foods were triggering my symptoms. I went to an allergist who told me I had no food allergies, so I went to another one who said "Of course you have food allergies," and got me started keeping a food journal. It took months to get a good list and then I had to do food challenges to find the individual ingredients in the foods that were the culprits. (example: It wasn't the whole hamburger. It was the bread and condiments.) My problem foods are mainly preservatives and foods changed by processing. (No problem with corn, but corn starch is bad.)

I recommend seeing a gastroenterologist and also an allergist if you can. The forum will hopefully give you support and ideas to help yourself, but we aren't doctors.

Best wishes. Keep in touch!

Hi Alcie,

I actually spent a lot of time on the forum until a couple of weeks ago when I felt better. I am under the care of Dr. Kaufman and was supposed to have the big tests last thursday :) ....but i have a terrible sore throat so we are rescheduling.

I think for me, I am super sensitive and I've noticed (as horrible as it is) that my precious chocolate really is a big trigger for me. My big LPR started right after Halloween (ugh) last year. I can FEEL that cold feeling very quickly, I get that taste in my mouth....

The other thing that I strongly feel is a trigger for me is fat. Butter, anything fried.

Now that I wrote it down i kind of see where I can "cheat" for instance I don't think sugar is that big a problem if it's not in chocolate so I can have the odd vanilla low fat cookie...

Not sure about tomatoes. No problem staying away from Peppermint which i hate... Spicy obviously not good. And I have a feeling full fat dairy is a no no. But I'm going to take your advice and look into it further.

The BIGGEST issue for me is not laying down or reclining for three hours after I eat. That is harder than giving up any of the food. Thanks for your reply. I'm ready to just start fresh now and throw out all the crap in the house.

Welcome back! You gotta stick to what your body can handle. I know it is really hard, believe me, but the alternative is to feel terrible. Stick to low fat, low acid. There are a lot og gluten free cookies that are low fat and non dairy, so check the grocery store! Find alterantives to your favorite stuff. I hear Carob tastes just like chocolate so maybe you can try that.
