I had surgery for a very large hiatial hernia on Dec. 2011 everything went well for 8 months then i started with a change in my bowels .Very loose stool that has turned into diarrea every morning.5 am or 6 am. I will completly clean out .Then I seem to be ok till the next morning.I have tried everything from diet , pepto bismo,to three doctor visits with no answers.it seems like it is getting worse .This has been going on now for four months.is it from the Nielsen Wrap? Ifeel good and have no trouble eating or cramping .Just a big blow out in the morning. I would appreciate input. Thanks.

Hi farmerd,
Welcome to Healing Well!  That type of diarrhea can occur after Nissen due to irritation to the vagus nerve.  I had the problem intermittently (and like you, just in the morning) throughout the first year and even into the second, when it suddenly stopped.

Is it possible that you're challeging your wrap more just now--eating faster and not chewing your food completely?  When something like this changes mid stream during the first year, that's my first suspicion.  Try slowing down with your eating, and chewing your food until it's a creamy consistency.  Stay away from raw veggies and things that will not be chewed fully.

Odds are that you've irritated your wrap or stomach, and it's reacting with dumping.  Can you hear gurgling?

Actually, I'm four years post-op and very occasionally, when I get my stomach revved up with gastritis, I can get an episode of dumping.  My guess is that if you take it easy with eating, chew your food carefully, and baby your stomach for a couple of weeks, you can get back to normal.

Glad you've joined the forum's Wrapped Club! yeah
Take care,

Hi farmerd,
If your docs don't know the cause, I don't pretend to.  However, your GI tract has been through a major revision, and even though it's 13 months post op, it's still adjusting to the changes.  Try being careful with what you're eating for an extended period of time.  This will allow healing to occur.

Just watching your diet for a day and discovering it doesn't stop the diarrhea isn't what I'm talking about.  Watch your diet and careful chewing for a month.  It takes time for healing.

I didn't have diarrhea daily.  It was intermittent.  However I did have it into the second year post op.  I figured it would be a quirk I would just have to live with.  Fortunately, like you, it happened just once a day in the morning.

One day I realized it wasn't happening any more.
Hopefully you can get your problem straightened up, too.
Good luck,
Denise
