First off, hello. I'm new here. I've been reading these boards for awhile, but I wanted to make my own post to get some ideas. Please excuse the post if it gets too lengthy.

Background: about 8 months ago now I was diagnosed with panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. I was seeing a talk therapist for it and she was helping a great deal. One thing I was having problems with however was eating. Somehow (I believe through probably a combination of not eating enough and not eating the right types of food) I started to get an intense burning in my throat and my tongue. My therapist was telling me it was a byproduct of anxiety so I didn't look into it. It kept getting worse so I decided to go see my general physician. He told me it was acid reflux and prescribed me prevacid. The prevacid didn't really help and it started to get worse. So my next step was to go see a gastroenterologist. He scheduled me for an upper endoscopy and a colonoscopy. He hasn't done the colonoscopy yet but the upper endoscopy diagnosis was mild gastritis and patulous esophagus. He prescribed me 40mg prilosec omeprazole for it. The burning went away for the most part but it was replaced with a scary numbness. My mouth, tongue, throat are all completely numb. Going down the middle of my chest it feels a very dull burning sensation along with a prickling feeling. And with that numbness is also a feeling of extreme constriction in my chest, inability to get a full satisfying breath, an acidic taste in my mouth and just an overall feeling of discomfort and panic. But it doesn't feel anything like the "panic" I felt before, I feel like it must be related to the acid.

I ran all kinds of tests. I went to the ER lots of times. They did blood work, they checked for vitamin deficiencies, they checked my hemoglobin count, they tested my thyroid, blood pressure, EKG, Echocardiogram, all came out perfectly normal so then they gave me xanax and said it's just anxiety. I took the Xanax and while it slightly calmed my mind down, the bodily symptoms were still there. So I just stopped taking it because I felt like the physical problem is causing me anxiety rather than the other way around. Nobody will help me and all the doctors think i'm nuts. Can anyone here give me some advice?

Summary of symptoms:
Numb mouth
Numb tongue
Acidic taste in mouth, constant mucus in throat and mouth
Digestive problems, GAS, stomach pains
Diagnosed with Patulous esophagus + mild gastritis, currently taking dexilant 60mg and ranitidine 150mg
Excessive acid, especially at night
Difficulty breathing, inability to take a deep satisfying breath, constant 24 hour feeling of inability to breath and discomfort in chest area especially. Constriction, dull burning.

Attempted to fix it with: major diet changes, vitamins, and PPI's to no avail.

If the acid is affecting your lungs and breathing problems then you need to see if the surgery is good for you.

I had a lot of breathing problems from the acid and the doctor evaluated me and decided the surgery would help me.

Get checked to see if you're a good candidate.

HI SS, do you get short of breath on exertion or have you even woken with the feeling that you have inhaled fluids? Gastritis can really make your life miserable as it is the combination of bile and stomach acid mixing together that gives you the conglomerate of painful symptoms as together they create gas. Kind of like a bubbling volcanic pit I suppose. I had problems breathing as well and I think that anxiety definitely played a major part with that aspect of my symptoms, as for the most part my reflux was managed by medication for 36 years when all of a sudden a whole heap of other awful symptoms reared their ugly heads.

I get short of breath with or without exertion. And yes I have woken up with the feeling of inhaled fluids. And which doctor should I ask about surgery? My gastroenterologist? I've had this problem only a few months but it's symptoms have seemed to expand rapidly to the point where I don't leave my house or bed much anymore and it's hard for me to do almost anything. My whole inside from my neck down has gone numb and I panic with that feeling. And my tongue has lost feeling, also my arms and legs feel tingly from time to time as well. As well a consistent tightness in my chest and a dull burning. Like I said I know anxiety plays a factor in the panic aspect of it but my body and breathing just don't feel right and everyone is baffled because all that they've tested for so far has for the most part came out fine.

The gastro can run the tests:
Barium swallow
Endoscopy
Stomach emptying
Motility study

Then he will send you to the surgeon.
