Hi, I have suffered from GERD for over 20 years.  Originally, my symptoms were heartburn and some pain in the stomach.  The symptoms were severe at times and would come and go.  When I retired 3 years ago, they disappeared entirely as I was no longer sitting over a desk all day long.  They came back several months ago but have changed entirely.  I now have the atypical symtoms - sore throat, a lump in the throat, and a burning tongue which I believe happens when I recline at night.

Nothing helps.  I am on Nexium, 40 mg, twice a day and still have the sore throat which wakes me up at night.  I have some heartburn but it is mild.  I do not have a hiatal hernia.  My doctor is recommending that I have the TIF procedure.  I have looked at a number of theads on this web site where they said that the TIF is less helpful in eliminating the atypical GERD symptoms (sore throat, etc.).  I am trying to decide whether or not to get the TIF.  Is there anyone in this forum that has had good luck with the TIF eliminating or reducing atypical GERD symptoms?

How long have you been on Nexium? I have heard that with your kind of symptoms the aggressive 2X a day PPI's can take several months to take effect. Also people try different PPI's before they find the one that works.

I am the exact opposite as you. Started as long term cough on and off for about 20 years every few years for six months (hell). A few months ago that changed into gastritis or reflux depending on the day. Prior to reflux I had years of intermittent gastritis or long coughing bouts that lasted many months but the reflux is new. I'm 47.

I was wondering though did anything help your original symptoms of stomach pain and heartburn? I am off everything right now and want to try natural and lifestyle changes before I recommit to PPI's. If they worked for you it might be a clue that it might be worth trying again.

Thanks.

Thanks for your post.  I have been off and on nexium for over ten years.  It did help but it only lessened the symptoms.  Since the atypical GERD just started up in August, I have been on NEXIUM for about 3 months.  I did have a lot of coughing and didn't realize that it was GERD until I realized that it only happened when I was at my desk or in a sitting position.  The coughing has stopped now but the sore throat remains.

With my heartburn symptoms, the biggest impact on whether or not I had symptoms in addition to the PPIs was wearing loose clothing so my stomach wasn't compressed, trying not to be at my desk too long and taking long walks after meals.

It may be a coincidence but my symptoms restarted after my dog died of old age.  We used to go on long walks (45 min. to an hour) after every meal.  After he passed, I stopped walking and my symptoms started about a month later.  I also started spending more time at my desk.  Who knows?

Good luck with your symptoms.
